THE BARRENJOEY COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE SPACE
The Barrenjoey Community
Performance Space Committee is
thrilled to advise that the State
government has provided $1
million towards the Barrenjoey
Community Performance Space.
Thank you to our local Member,
Rob Stokes for his support.
You can view the new model for
the building in the foyer.
After a number of successful grant
applications and fundraising, we
were in a position to start phase 1
of the build – an outdoor
amphitheatre. However with this
injection of funds means that we
can hopefully now complete the
entire build in one process, saving
many thousands of dollars as the
complete process will be more
economical than two separate
processes.
There has been a lot of hard work
behind the scenes and the
Committee would like to thank
Richard Cole Architecture for the
incredible design and work that
Richard and his team have done
behind the scene.
The BCPS is currently in the planning phase with the Department of Education and an architect
has been appointed. The next process will be to complete the planning phase to achieve a DA
through Northern Beaches Council. Following that we will tender for the build. We are hoping that
we will be in a position to start building early 2018 with completion in 2018 in time for the 50th
celebrations.
Congratulations to the Committee consisting of; Christy Bishop, Kim Hoggard, Cilla Cole, Richard Cole and Kalinda Hawson.
Richard has provided all his work to date free of charge, saving the P&C many thousands of dollars. It is a very generous gesture and we are very grateful.
Have a great week…………..Ian Bowsher

Brown.
The night celebrated their success in
gaining positions of leadership within the

We can’t wait to see what their plans
are for 2018.

COMMUNICATION WITH TEACHERS
We have recently disabled the Create Message button in the Parent Portal for parents to contact
teachers.
The reason is that this message does not go directly to the teacher’s email; instead it sits in an
area of the portal that is rarely visited by the teachers.
We believe that it is more expedient for parents to contact teachers through the
barrenjoey-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au email – which is attended every day – and that way we can
ensure that the teacher will receive the email in their normal email account.
Thank you for your understanding.

Learning the golden rule…..It is much more cost effective to retain
our natural areas, than it is to recreate them…..Dale :)
YEAR 12 BUSINESS STUDIES – MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK
Students were involved in designing a task operations system and then carrying out the work
to cut and remove piles of lantana and other weeds as well as spreading mulch. The use of
various tools and equipment was tested to determine the most efficient approach. Students
worked effectively to complete the entire job within the hour and then began tackling the next
section under Dale’s expert supervision.
This approach ensures a site’s biodiversity is retained, with indigenous plants continuing to
thrive, set seed and regenerate. By slowly working away at the ‘weed fronts’ you can enable
the indigenous species to regenerate in place of the weeds. The opposite approach, tackling
the densest weediest areas first only makes more room for weeds to regenerate and can be a
huge waste of time and effort.
Year 12 Business Studies students volunteered an hour of
their time to assist Dale Kentwell in her labours to
regenerate bush vegetation adjoining the community
garden.
Dale explained the merits of the process to return habitat
to its native state. Environmental weeds are one of the
biggest threats to our biodiversity in remnant bushland like
this.
Introduced species crowd out indigenous species,
preventing their regeneration and often killing them
through competition. The cost is loss of habitat for many native birds and small mammals.
SPORTS NEWS
Surfing
Cedar Year 7 and Bodhi Year 10, competed at the Western Australian Rip Curl Gromsearch
competition, presented by Flight Centre, at Trigg Beach, Perth earlier in the month and Cedar won
the 14 and under division and Bodhi won the 16 and under division.
A Gromsearch Competition is held in each of Victoria, NSW, Western Australia and Queensland.
Cedar and Bodhi finished runner up in the NSW contest.
All Rip Curl GromSearch events include boys’ and girls’ divisions in 16 and under, 14 and under,
and 12 and under age groups. Surfers receive points for their results in each event, which then
count towards a National GromSearch ratings system, allowing surfers from around Australia to
compare their results with contemporaries.
Leaders on the National Ratings will then qualify for the last event of the series, the Rip Curl
GromSearch National Final, to be held at Woonoona, NSW on January 15-17, 2018.
Cedar and Bodhi now lead the national ratings.
NASA – North Avalon Surfriders Association
Last weekend NASA held their Club competition at North Avalon Beach.
Congratulations to all the students from Barrenjoey High who competed and
had some excellent results.

Dear ........,
We need your help now!! I know we all keep
meaning to do it but now is the time to send in
your recipe and be part of our community
cookbook. We have the team poised for
action but we would love more recipes so we
can begin.
Thank you to those who have already sent in
their recipe, here is the lovely story behind
Lulu’s family favourite soup.
“I first learnt to cook in 1968 - Mrs Jenkins'
Home Science Class - Inaugural Year -
Barrenjoey High School.
I remember the room, the grill (lamb chops
and tomatoes) so well.
I've been enjoying cooking ever since. I'm a
Grandmother five times over now - they call
me Lulu.
I still make simple food, without fuss with lots
of veggies. “
Be inspired and send your recipes to
barrenjoeycookbook@gmail.com
by the end of October. Many thanks the
Cookbook team.
LEEP INTO MATHS @ BARRENJOEY
Learning Enrichment and Extension Program
LEEP is a Year 7-10 tutorial program run by Barrenjoey
maths teachers, straight after school (3:10 - 4:10) in A13 on
selected afternoons.
Participation in LEEP has led to positive changes in
confidence, attitudes towards maths and improved overall
learning outcomes
There is a small cost of $10 per term to cover afternoon tea
before the session starts.
Regards,
Alison Munro (LEEP coordinator)
