C.L. DAVIS/S.W. THOMPSON DVM FOUNDATION A TAX-EXEMPT, DONATIVE, PUBLICLY-SUPPORTED CHARITY
FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF VETERINARY AND COMPARATIVE PATHOLOGY
Senior Editor: B. H. Williams, DVM Managing Editor: V. S. Carreira, DVM, PhD
Volume 49 Issue 8 August 2019
The Davis-Thompson DVM
Foundation comes to Ljubljana
After last year’s initial meeting in Belgrade, the “2nd Annual Davis-Thompson
Foundation Eastern European Veterinary Pathology Meeting” was this year
held at the Veterinary Faculty in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. Many of
you may not have heard of this small, picturesque country which is home to
approximately 2 million people, but the participants of this year’s meeting will
surely remember it.
At the meeting, which took place between 29th and 31st May, the participants
had the opportunity to listen to four amazing international speakers. Dr Fabio
Del Piero (Louisiana State University) broke the ice with his interesting
lectures on intoxications and cattle diseases. Dr Simon Priestnall (Royal
Veterinary College) followed the next day with griping lectures on infectious
and gastrointestinal diseases of dogs and cats and reporting of gastrointestinal
biopsies.

Dr Alexander Stoll (University of Surrey) and Dr Harriet Brooks-Brownlie (University of Bristol) wrapped it
up with a splendid presentation of different forensic pathology topics. On the first day a lecture was also given
by a local speaker Dr Tanja Švara who presented an interesting case of pulmonary hypoplasia and anasarca
syndrome in two calves of the autochthonous Cika breed.

But the participants were not only offered top notch lectures, they also got a sneak peek of Slovenia. On
Thursday afternoon the whole delegation of 58 participants, 4 speakers and 9 local organizers got on buses and
headed off West towards the Slovenian Littoral region. They first visited a ham producer in Lokev where they
had a tour of their facilities for producing Karst Prosciutto and other cured meat products and then feasted on
these products together with sheep cheese made at the Veterinary Faculty’s farm Vremščica. Their excursion
continued to the Stud farm Lipica, where they breed Slovenia’s national jewel, the Lipizzaner horse. This breed
is known for its unique feature – the foals are born black or brown and with age turn white due to greying of
their coat.
Thursday ended with a formal dinner at the oldest restaurant in Ljubljana, called Šestica, which dates back to
1776 and offers typical Slovenian cuisine. During dinner the guests also saw a short performance of Slovenian
folklore dancing.
The weather started off rainy in the beginning of the event but fortunately turned sunny on Friday, which meant
that after the meeting ended the participants were able to attend a walking tour of Ljubljana finishing in the
centre of town at the Open Kitchen stalls.
The meeting proved as a great success and all have agreed that it would be great if this meeting continued as
an annual event. The preliminary talks have already started and it is planned that next year’s meeting will be in
North Macedonia’s city of Ohrid, a UNESCO natural and cultural heritage site.
At this point we would like to express our gratitude to the Dean of the Veterinary Faculty, University of
Ljubljana for his support in organizing this event, to Dr Gregor Majdič and Mrs Anita Kermavnar for their
encouraging words at the meeting’s opening and to all the participants who made the event so delightful. A
great thank you also goes to all our sponsors who helped us make this event memorable.

Davis-Thompson Foundation Pathology Externship Since 1980, the Davis-Thompson Foundation lab sites have hosted more than 125 veterinary students at 8
participating diagnostic laboratories. These students usually have a strong interest in pathology itself or zoo or
poultry medicine that require a strong pathology background. The Foundation is always interested in having
veterinary students apply for an externship and we would like to add more externship sites that do not usually
have veterinary students, to help increase their interest and knowledge of pathology with some off-campus
experience. For more information, contact Dr. Jim Britt, jobritt@sbcglobal.net; 501-912-1449.
Retiring?
Have slides left over from your recent slide seminar? Just looking to free up some storage space? The
Foundation is looking for additional glass slides, kodachromes and other similar materials for its
Correspondence Division and Study Centers. All materials should be well-identified with as much accompany
history and discussion as possible, as these materials are expressly used for teaching. Moreover, as the
Foundation is a publicly donative charity, all donated materials are tax-deductible. For more information, please
contact Dr. Bruce Williams at bruce.h.williams.dvm@gmail.com.

Diagnostic Exercise From The Davis-Thompson Foundation*
Case #107 Month: October Year: 2018
Contributors: Mariana Martins Flores*, DVM, MS, Doctor in Veterinary Pathology; Rafael Almeida Fighera*,
DVM, MS, Doctor in Veterinary Pathology. *Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology, Universidade Federal de Santa
Maria (UFSM), Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Clinical History: An adult, female spayed, mixed-breed domestic shorthair cat was submitted to necropsy and
had a history of intense salivation and incoordination. The owner, who suspected poisoning, reported that the cat
died a few days after the onset of the clinical signs. The cat came from a farm located in Rio Grande do Sul,
Brazil, and had free access to the outdoors.

‘1st Guatemalan Meeting of the CL Davis/SW Thompson Foundation’
Guatemala City, April 9-10 2019
The 1st Guatemalan Meeting of the CL Davis/SW Thompson Foundation was held at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal
Husbandry, University of San Carlos de Guatemala, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on April 9 and 10, 2019.
The seminar was organized by Dr. Dora Chang, Director of Accreditation, with help from Dr. Blanca Zelaya, Dr. Débora Rodríguez
and a large number of other enthusiastic collaborators. Sponsors were the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, the
CL Davis/SW Thompson Foundation and the Latin Comparative Pathology Group.
The lecturers were Drs Ana Alcaraz, from Western
University of Health Sciences, California, Joseph
Haynes, Iowa State University, Iowa and Francisco
Uzal, UCDavis, California. Dr Alcaraz lectured on
interpretation of gross lesions, tissue submission
and diseases of the liver and the central nervous
system. Dr Haynes gave lectures on skeletal and
ocular pathology, and Dr Uzal presented on the
formulation of gross diagnosis, alimentary and
clostridial diseases.
The meeting was very well attended by close to
150 students, pathologists, microbiologists,
lecturers and clinicians who interacted
continuously with the faculty, asking questions and
providing very helpful insights about animal
diseases in Guatemala.
The organization was impecable and the hospitality of our Guatemalan hosts was outstanding and highly appreciated. The excitment of
the organizers, lecturers and audience was great and the seminar was an utter success.
In addition, a new CL Davis/SW Thompson Foundation study center was created in a classroom for virtual pathology teaching which
was inaugurated during the meeting by the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Gustavo Taracena. The Foundation donated a large number of books
and DVDs, which are already part of the newly
created study center. New seminars will be held in
coming years in Guatemala in line with the
Davis/Thomson Foundation mission to further the
international advancement of education in
veterinary and comparative pathology.
