Assistive technologies in spatial environments

Abstract Spatial Cognition is concerned with the

acquisition, organization, utilization and revision of

knowledge about spatial environments, be it real or

abstract, human or machine. For persons with cogni-

tive disabilities, spatial cognition is frequently chal-

lenged. For developers, addressing spatial cognition as

a component of the design process is critical. This

session will focus on research and development of new

cognitive technologies designed to facilitate spatial

cognition and ameliorate barriers to activity and par-

ticipation for persons with cognitive disabilities. Re-

search and engineering projects under design and

development within the Rehabilitation Engineering

Research Center for Advancing Cognitive Technolo-

gies (RERC-ACT) will be highlighted.
