Armed Forces Champions Resource Pack Katie Nicholas and Emily Hopkins The KM team
Background
• HEE Mandate and Armed Forces Covenant
• Approached by
colleague in Education Transformation team with a remit around Veterans
• North West Armed Forces Champions Network established but still new
• In need of a set of
resources they could all access and a way/ place to share learning
What do we mean by Armed Forces? • Veterans - anyone who
has served more than one day in the forces
• Reservists - paid
employment elsewhere, receive additional specialist training and belong to a Unit (i.e. 207 Manchester field hospital)
Researched, designed and created three lots of information products:

Stats and impact “The resource was well received by the network of champions and external stakeholders – NHS England, PHE, NW Armed Forces Network, MoD, HEE central team, NW Employers. The network members all do the Champion role as an adjunct to their day job; they don’t have time or capacity to seek out resources themselves. The resource wouldn’t have happened otherwise, and effectiveness of supporting the network would have been reduced. It required expertise and skills in presentation of information, layout and systems.” HEE North West Lead for Veterans

KM toolkit
“Thanks for sharing, I am going to send it to our military veterans lead.” “This looks a great resource. We have staff in our organisation who would certainly be interested in this resource” “This looks great – thanks for sharing! I know there was interest in local GM PH about veteran health, so I will share with them.” Feedback from LIHNN
• A request for a ‘Cadets’ leaflet • KM team to take a ‘step back’ so the network can learn to
facilitate the sharing of learning on its own • Resource pack will remain available and be used a
springboard for new network members
Next Steps
1. Alternative ways of packaging/ presenting information works
2. Resources like this difficult to keep up-to-date – future planning necessary
3. Consult your experts… 4. …but not too much 5. Include dates on everything 6. Get your Comms team on board 7. Don’t be scared to use non-
traditional information sources
