WEDNESDAY’S MATCH
vs.
Wednesday night’s matchup marks the fourth time that the Armada FC has battled FC Edmonton. Colin Miller’s Eddies will be looking to earn their first victory in series history over the Armada. FC Edmonton drew with Jacksonville last season in Edmonton but is winless in Jacksonville.
It will also be Star Wars Night, and the force will be strong at Community First Park as everyone’s favorite characters from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away will be out and about. Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite gear and dress up as their favorite character from the movie saga as they cheer their ‘‘Boys In Blue’’ to victory. There will also be replica lightsabers given to the first 1,000 fans through the gates.
All the exciting matchday traditions remain intact as the team takes the pitch tonight. As always, it will be easy to know when the Armada FC players find the back of the net. Prior to every home match and after every Armada FC goal scored, the cannons will be fired. Just before the teams enter the pitch for team introductions, the Armada FC’s biggest nautical supporter, Squid Vicious, is released in stunning fashion, casting a shadow over the opposition and showing its eight-legged support for the ‘‘Boys in Blue.’’
Saturday night marks NASL newcomer Rayo OKC’s first official visit to Community First Park. Owned by Spanish La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, Rayo OKC made a preseason visit to Jacksonville in March, so many on the team are no stranger to Jacksonville. Head coach Alen Marcina and forward Billy Forbes visited Jacksonville twice as members of the San Antonio Scorpions.
It will also be the Armada FC’s Pride Night Celebration, which will celebrate unity with the LGBT community on the First Coast. Special edition Armada FC Pride Night scarves will be given out to the first 1,000 fans through the gates. After the match, fireworks will be launched from the stadium roof.
Prior to the match, the all new Intuition Blue and Bold Street Party presented by PRI Productions will take place from 4:30-6:45 p.m. on A. Phillip Randolph Blvd. between Duval and Adams St. The bash features Intuition beers, special giveaways, exciting tailgating games and food trucks.

ASSISTANT COACHJIM ROONEYTony Meola named former MLS All-Star and U.S. National Team U-17 assistant coach Jim Rooney as his top manage-ment on Nov. 25, 2015.
A native of the Bronx, New York, Rooney was a midfielder who played with Meola at the Long Island Rough Riders in 1995 and at the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 1998 and 1999. Rooney made 116 career appearances in MLS with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution.

TONY’S NOTES
It’s good to be back home here at Community First Park. Our goal as a team is to play our best and earn three points every time we step out on the field. It doesn’t matter whether you play home or away, however, I can honestly say that is a great feeling to know that we can play in front of such great support as we get here in Jacksonville. It definitely makes a difference and you feel it in the atmosphere.
I have talked about it since I first took the job: not every game is going to be pretty, but sometimes we have to roll up our sleeves. We have to take the game to our opponents, and we have learned that early on here this season. As we have seen, no game is going to be easy, so it is up to us to earn those battles.
This is about building something, and we still have a long way to go, but I have confidence that we are growing in the right direction. There are a bunch of new faces on the team and we are starting to click. As we continue to build, we will inherently get better as a team, but it’s going to be these nitty gritty battles that will determine who gets those playoffs spots. That is our goal. We want to be playing in November.
Thank you for your support, and we can’t wait to hear you out there this week!
- Head Coach & Technical Director,
Tony Meola

IRISH ROVER
Armada team captain and lucky charm Richie Ryan sailed south during the offseason after accepting the opportunity to play for U.S. Soccer legend Tony Meola. After leading Ottawa Fury to its first NASL championship appearance, the experienced midfielder will be looking duplicate his success with new teammates and a new home port.
Q: How is Jacksonville treating you?
It has been relaxing, but I haven’t got around the city too much so far. My family just got here two weeks ago. Our stuff just got delivered from Canada, so I feel as though we are starting to get settled. I am looking forward to seeing what is around the city. I have been living away from home since I was 16, so 15 years ago now. Jacksonville is starting to feel like home since my family arrived. The television has been taken over by my little girl. No more soccer, it’s all cartoons now.
Q: Did you always want to end up in the United States or was it just in your path?
It is something that I looked at when I was 25 and 26 when I was playing in Ireland. I had an opportunity to go on trial with (MLS club) FC Dallas, but it didn’t fall at the right time. We (Sligo Rovers) had just qualified for the cup final in Ireland and the playoffs had ended for Dallas. That really put it in my mind, so when my time at Dundee United came to an end, I started to weigh my options. I was 28 or

29 at the time, and when I started to look into it, I actually started speaking to the people that made it happen.
It think it is because the game is growing so much over here. You look at soccer in North America, and the game is going from strength to strength. It is certainly something that I wanted to be part of. In the long-term, maybe even coaching when the day comes when I have to hang up my boots.
I played half a season in Dublin for Sligo Rovers, which I still hold in high regard, but I wanted a new challenge in my career. My wife was more than happy to come and travel with me and I couldn’t think of any better place to be. So from there we went to see what North American had in store for us. My wife makes me very happy and grounded. We are far from home but still somewhere that we can call home.
Q: You have a natural leadership role on the team. How do you accept that?
I think from coming over to Ottawa two years ago and now being here in Jacksonville, I like to be a role model to the younger players. I think from my own experiences, I have a lot to offer to the younger players. You learn from your mistakes and hopefully I can feed that off on some of these younger players so that they can have long career. Someone like Danny Barrow looks up to me, and I know how important it is for a younger player like
Richie Ryan arrived to Jacksonville following two seasons as Ottawa’s captain, where he made 39 starts and logged 3,499 minutes in 41 total appearances while notching four goals and three assists. He was named to the NASL’s Best XI and led Ottawa to the best record
in the NASL’s 2015 Fall Season and an appearance in the NASL Championship Final in November of 2015. Ryan was named captain of the 2016 Armada FC squad and has appeared in every match so far this season.
“THE SPRING SEASON IS A SPRINT, BUT WHERE I COME FROM I AM USED TO A 40-GAME SEASON, THE MARATHON.”

him to have an older player around. He is very young, far away from his home at a young age and I know what that is like. In training and on the pitch, he has big potential, and we want to see him do well.
Q: Where do you see the Armada going this season?
We had a long preseason together. So during that time, we formed some real friendships. Those friendships are very important, especially at this level of football. We aren’t Messi or Ronaldo, so we aren’t the type of players that can carry the team by themselves. It is important that we are friends and know that we have each other’s back.
With the coaches, I believe Tony has put together a team that will be able to play a style he wants. He wants to go from strength-to-strength from week-to-week. We get a couple of wins like we did against Miami FC and then it becomes a confidence thing. Once you start to win games and you start to believe in yourself and your team as a group, your chest goes out a little bit more and it’s empowering. We start to think ‘we can go and beat these guys’ or ‘we can beat anyone, home or away.’ That is the beauty of this league. Anyone can get that win week-to-week. There are not too many thrashings. The spring season is a sprint, but where I come from, I am used to a 40-game season, the marathon. It takes a little while for teams to find their feet in the spring season and hopefully we will find ours. There is a lot of work to do, but so does every other team in the league.
What’s your gameday music choice?
You are asking the wrong man. I love music, but I could listen to anything that sounds good. It could be an old R&B song or a funky dance song. I like it all.
What I love is when I go home in the offseason and see my mates. Head down to an Irish pub, have a pint of Guinness, and listen to a guy in the corner with a guitar.
• Whiskey In The Jar • Fields of Athenry • One Bright Blue Rose • Dirty Old Town
That is what I look forward to during the offseason. On matchdays, I listen to whatever Shawn Nicklaw puts on.

BIG WEEK COMING UP FOR THE ARMADA
Just how important is this week for the Armada? It could be the difference in making the NASL Championship or not.
Yes, November is a long way away, but consider the opportunity.
Three matches into the season, the Armada have won one, lost one and drawn one. With back to back matches at home, where they have always performed better, Tony Meola’s team can vault themselves right into the thick of contention in the Spring Season. While Carolina has opened strong, winning their first four, there are still six matches remainin for the RailHawks in the spring spring (seven for Jacksonville).
Here’s what the Armada must navigate. First, It’s FC Edmonton, a team who finally won their first last week when they beat winless Ottawa in a Canadian derby. Edmonton will have to fly 2700 miles to Florida and try to perform better than they did last year in Jacksonville. You may recall that the Armada opened the 2015 season with a 3-1 victory over the Eddies at EverBank Field, then took a come-from-behind 3-2 decision in the Fall season at Community First Park. I like the Armada’s chances.
Then, it’s NASL expansion side Rayo OKC, who won their first league fixture with a late PK in Miami against another expansion side. Rayo has a good looking roster as expansion teams go, but winning on the road, especially playing on a pitch as unique as Jacksonville’s can be a tall task.
So if the Armada take care of business at home, they would sit with 10 points from five matches. With Carolina losing this weekend, the race for the spring championship is one again wide open. In fact, the Armada could end the weekend as high as second in the table.
In short, next week is a massive opportunity for the Armada.
FC EDMONTON OPPONENT PROFILE
FC Edmonton is one of the original clubs to join the modern-era North American Soccer League when it was formed in 2011. Owned by Tom and Dave Fath of the Fath Group, who have more than 30 years of professional soccer experience, the team is also affectionately known as the Eddies.
Since 2013, FC Edmonton has been coached by Hamilton, Scotland, native Colin Miller, who played more than 20 years professionally as a defender and notched 61 caps with the Canadian National Team from 1983-97.
The Eddies bring a 1W-1D-2L record into Wednesday’s contest and are fresh off a 2-0 win over Ottawa Fury last Saturday in the first installment of this year’s Canadian Rivalry. The Armada leads the all-time series with the Eddies, 2-1-0, with both wins coming in Jacksonville.

RAYO OKC OPPONENT PROFILE
Rayo OKC will be the second NASL expansion side the Armada faces this season. The club was founded in 2015 and is owned by Raúl Martín Presa, who also owns Spanish La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, and Oklahoma native Sean Jones. The team will start their inaugural season this spring of 2016.
Rayo OKC’s head coach is Alen Marcina, a 36-year-old native of Surrey, British Colombia, Canada. Marcina has plenty of striking experience, having started his professional career in 2002. He’s had many appearances with teams like Herfølge and former NASL club, the Puerto Rico Islanders. From 2013-15, Marcina was the head coach of defunct NASL club, the San Antonio Scorpions, and led the side to a league title in 2014.
Although this is Rayo OKC’s first season, it isn’t the first time the side has clashed with the Armada. The Armada’s last preseason game on March 19 was against Rayo OKC, which ended in a 3-1 loss for Jacksonville.
