The rare sighting of the terrifying octupus-like creature made famous by Jules Verne in his classic novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, was witnessed by a large crowd of soccer fans during the second half of Jacksonville Armada FC’s first home soccer match at Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville against Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

The Kraken surfaced in the north-east corner of the stadium next to the boisterous Section 904 supporters group. It is the first sighting of the monster since 2012, when the giant squid was captured on film by researcher Edie Widder for the Discovery Channel 2000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. It appears that the Kraken may have found it’s way into Community First Park after entering the St. Johns River from the Atlantic Ocean off the First Coast sometime during Friday.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported a large sonar presence close to U.S. Naval Base Mayport on Friday evening and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters were seen in the vicinity of Community First Park just before the Armada FC match.

“The Coast Guard has been monitoring a significant disturbance on the St. Johns River that answers the considerable size and speed of a Kraken,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Stephen Lehmann, Top Flight Public Affairs Specialist for Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville. “We urge all mariners and recreational boaters to wear life jackets, carry signaling devices and to refrain from agitating the beast. It seems particularly enraged by the chants of from fans of visiting soccer teams.”

Section 904 supporter Sebastian Córdona, who witnessed the fearsome sight, said: “It was just incredible. I have never seen anything like it. It was a huge blue octopus around 30-40 foot in height which appeared at the corner flag just before the start of the second half.

“We were terrified at first, but it seemed to be waving at us, and then we noticed it was wearing a huge Armada FC scarf and had a soccer ball under it’s tentacles. It looked like it was supporting our team, balling it’s feelers like fists and waving them menacingly at the Fort Lauderdale Strikers ... which was just fine by us!”

Armada FC President, Steve Livingstone, confirmed the sighting, saying: “We received a warning earlier in the day from the Coast Guard. One moment our players were warming up for the second half and the next, a huge Kraken emerged from the corner of the stadium.

“We were a little worried at first, and thought about evacuating the stadium, but the beastie seemed to be really friendly with the kids in our stadium as well as our supporters section - and a little angry at the Strikers players - so it looks like it may be an Armada fan.

“I’m not sure where it got the large Armada scarf it was wearing from, but if it shows up at our next match on March 8th against the Charleston Battery we’ll have to think about adopting it as our mascot and having our fans give it a name. Hopefully it will come on board the Armada and help us defend our home pitch at Community First Park at every match.”

The Armada FC would like to thank all at U.S. Coast Guard for providing their great support and protection.

We would like to thank you, the fans, for coming out to show your enthusiasm at the team’s first match at Community First Park. The players really fed off your support, and there is no doubt that we consistently perform better in front of this stellar home crowd. The stadium really came to life last week, and it is clear that it is due to the overwhelming support from all the fans.

Our last win gave us a nice boost of momentum as we inch closer to the regular season. But we remain focused on finishing out the remainder of the preseason strong. That requires our complete attention to building our style of play and improving our conditioning.

We are taking on an opponent that previously beat us in February on their home pitch. This is proof that we must not underestimate any opponent. They play a very different style than our team, so it is absolutely essential that we maintain possession of the ball and play a fast tempo.

We are counting on the speed that Jemal Johnson and Farah & Farah Man of the Match Pascal Millien brought to the Fort Lauderdale last Saturday. And with consistent attacking pressure from defenders Lucas Trejo and Matt Bahner, we believe that we can not only achieve a positive result but also bring more exciting soccer for fans to enjoy.

As we mentioned, your support is so important to our team’s success. We look forward to seeing every one of you cheering for the team at every match.

Guillermo Hoyos & José Luis Villarreal

3.8.2015Match day

Armada FC’s supporters group Section 904 has been working hard to bring a passionate and feverish atmosphere to the team’s matches this season.

The group began planning for the Armada FC’s inaugural season almost a year ago, and the results of the members’ work have been very visible at both the Armada FC’s home preseason matches this season.

With smoke billowing out of the bleacher seating on the eastside of Community First Park, the echoing drumline beating away and the sounds of chants filling the air, it was clear that Section 904 had landed. The supporters’ group culture had begun to sink in, and they were already making an impression.

Founding member Sebastian Cardona knew that he was on to something special after the first match ended. He shared some the group’s current successes as well as a peak into what to expect from Section 904 in the upcoming season.

“It was awesome, just a dream come true,” Cardona said about the victory over

Philadelphia Union. “All the work that we put in and all the time it took to put this together (paid off). To have everything come to fruition and then for the team to give us everything they had and deliver that win for all the fans was just amazing.”

“We are excited to be moving into Community First Park. The atmosphere is going to be a lot better for the group. The team is going to really feel our presence, but the rest of the stadium and the city is going definitely feel a vibe resonating from Section 904. They are going to be able to see all the color, hear the chants and catch some of the cool things that we are planning.

Cardona and Section 904 are already looking toward the future. He hinted around some big projects that give the group even more of an edge.

“We are working on it. We want to have a huge TIFO display filled with color. We really want the team and the city to take pride in that they see out behind the net.”

“We are working on some chants that will be easy for fans not sitting in Section 904 to pick up on. We really love to see the whole stadium join us in chanting,” Cardona added. “(We) especially (want that) now that we are playing at Community First Park because there is less distance between the supporters. It’s smaller, and everyone can hear us not the two sections next to us.”

“I would love to see the whole stadium chanting, ‘Let’s go boys in blue.’ That would pretty much be a dream come true for me.”

Jemal Johnson is no stranger to today’s matchup. In fact, the former English Premier League striker spent the 2013 spring season with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Johnson, originally from Paterson, N.J., moved to England at a young age and began his career in the youth academies of Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers. Johnson’s talented skillset has earned him 25 goals and 13 assists in 217 career appearances before joining the frontline of Armada FC this past December.

Matt Bahner is heading into familiar territory today against his old USL foe, the Charleston Battery. Bahner, an Ohio native and graduate of the University of Cincinnati, helped lead his previous side, the Harrisburg City Islanders, to the finals of the USL playoffs last year. His versatility on pitch has made him a valuable defensive asset to the Armada FC, however his talents stretch well beyond the touchline. With a degree in chemical engineering, Bahner also brings an astuteness as well as an appetite for success to the new squad. As a starter in every Armada FC match in the preseason so far, he has been a force on the defensive line.

Into the Blue with Matt Bahner

How strong is this Charleston team?

They are definitely a good team. I have played against them quite a few times from my time in the USL. They are usually a tough team that are hard to break down and

score goals against. So we are going to work hard to control the match.

What will it take to return the favor and beat Charleston in this rematch?

They are a very hard-working, defensive-minded team. Knowing that, I really think we are going to have to apply a lot of pressure and control the ball as much as

possible going into this match. I know what I have to bring in order to have a successful match, and if I can apply that against these guys, I think we will

have a better result than our last match against them.

How does playing in on Armada FC compare to playing in the USL so far?

So far, it has been great. It is definitely a step up; maybe even two steps up. From the coaching staff to the organization, it is a different class than what I got

used to playing in the USL. The level of experience here in the NASL is very impressive.

You grew up and played the majority of your career in the frigid north. How does it feel to come play in a

warm, southern city?

Honestly, it’s a dream come true. I have always wanted to live in a warmer climate. I have played tournaments

down here before and was always envious of the Florida teams who can play all year round. It is just

awesome now that I have the chance to do that. Plus, living near the beach is something that I

could really want to get used to.

Which players on the team do connect with, both the pitch and off?

Not so surprisingly, my signing buddy, Shawn Nicklaw. We both came here on trial in October and really just

hit it off. Also, my roommate Jemal Johnson. I can’t get enough of his British accent. Those are the two that I have become

close to so far. Honestly, everybody on the team is very close, language barriers aside; we work well together. We have a

Page 19: Armada Matchday Issue 3 | Armada FC vs. Charleston Battery - March 8, 2015

19

great group of guys, and it is going to start to show on the field.

Q: What do you want to accomplish here in Jacksonville?

My main goal this season is the same as the teams – we want to win the NASL Championship. We want to start by winning the spring season, then win the fall season. We want that winning mentality here, and I think that is exactly the attitude that we all have.

Personally, I want to keep improving as a player as I did in the USL. If I do that, then you never know what could happen. That is how I got here. I think the Armada FC is the perfect place for me to be right now.

Q: How is the North Florida treating you so far?

So far, it has been great. There are pleasant people everywhere, and the weather is where it is at. (It is) a little colder than I was expecting, but it is definitely not Cincinnati with seven inches of snow during the winter. I can handle the cold, so as long as there is no snow.

Q: What is one thing that you couldn’t live without?

Skyline Chili! (It is) a hometown favorite for me. It is a delicacy in Cincinnati. If you haven’t had it, I recommend it.

SEASON OUTLOOKThe Battery finished the 2014 season in fifth place in the USL standings.

The team qualified for the playoffs but was eliminated by the Richmond Kickers in the first round. On Feb. 18 in Charleston, the Battery took advantage of a gassed Armada FC squad that was without Keita en route to a 1-0 win. Austin Savage netted a goal midway through the second to seal the win for the Battery.

The team also had a dramatic 1-0 victory over MLS affiliate Houston Dynamo and played to a draw with Orlando City SC in the Carolina Challenge Cup. The Battery continues to add players to its arsenal alongside international standouts like Jamaican-born striker Dane Kelly and Ghanaian defender Emmanuel Adjetey.

The Charleston Battery have been forging the way for soccer in the south for over two decades now. The club has competed in the third division of American soccer since 1993 and has consis-tently competed against and beat Major League Soccer (MLS) teams in exhibitions and U.S. Open Cup matches. The Battery also have four USL championships in their trophy case. The team have played its home matches at the Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island, the first privately funded soccer-specific stadium built in the United States since 1999.

The club also hosts the annual Carolina Challenge Cup, an annual four-team round robin pre-season competition that pits MLS teams against USL teams. The Battery also have a rare and ongoing rivalry with the DC United coined the Coffee Pot Cup by the loyal Battery supporters. The rivalry supposedly stems from an incident involving broken coffee pots at Blackbaud Stadium after a 4-3 Charleston upset of United in the 1999 U.S. Open Cup.

Page 43: Armada Matchday Issue 3 | Armada FC vs. Charleston Battery - March 8, 2015

The first contest at the Armada FC’s new home pitch, Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, proved to be quite a success for Northeast Florida’s new professional soccer team. Only hours after converting a baseball park into a soccer pitch for the first time ever in Jacksonville, a seemingly never-ending layer of mist coated the freshly laid turf in downtown Jacksonville.

Despite the inclement weather, players, staff and 5,232 of the River City’s most enthusiastic soccer supporters made their way out to Community First Park to watch the first ever victory at the Armada FC’s home venue.

In the end, it paid off. Jacksonville’s faithful were rewarded with intense and exciting match that saw Armada FC defender Shawn Nicklaw sink the Armada FC’s first NASL opponent, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, before racing over to the corner to celebrate with the on looking crowd.

Along with the rain, new vitality swept over the stadium. A spirited March to the Match led by Section 904 escorted the crowd who came out early to enjoy the Armada Matchday Experience presented by PRI Productions to the front gates. The sound of the drumline echoed out the bleachers as the supporters group added a colorful display of pride and passion. On field announcer T-Roy, from 93.3 The Beat, called for the chants of AR-MA-DA! A mythical beast crept out from behind a plume of smoke to the surprised of all everyone in attendance.

The cannons fired, the Kraken surfaced and fireworks erupted to make the opening night at Community First Park a night to remember. The Armada FC had shipped out in stunning fashion.

Soccer has hit the First Coast, and Community First Park is now where it calls home.
