• Aquaculture is a recent activity in Libya.
• it was started by culturing of many fresh water fish species during the seventies
• but it was not successful because of marketing restrictions (not accepted by consumers).
• Marine fish culture, followed a about ten years later under the governmental sector.
• The development was slow and the production limited due to inefficient governmental management of such activities.
• In the recent years a number of private investors appeared in this field.
• Even though their knowledge and experience are very limited,
• Their attempts are very promising with the helping hand (scientific consultations) offered by MBRC-Tajura and their willingness to succeed.
• Facilities (sites, loans) from government to the private sector are provided.
• There are many advantages for the aquaculture industry to prosper in Libya.
(Suitable climate that suits many
species, low pollutions and the
cheap power source.)
• it is very feasible and diverse in species and raring techniques.
• Aquaculture could prosper in Libya in the near future, in the production as well as species diversity, considering the mentioned advantages and the good management.
