Session Outline• You could purchase the corresponding 6 bird teddies if desired and talk to the children about their different colours beforehand and use them to facilitate free play and consolidation afterwards.
• Put the children into pairs. (You could use pairing cards to do this.) • Discuss your outdoor area map with the children. Can they point to
where they are now? Can they name any features? Can they orientate the map? Explain that there are 6 hidden cards about common UK birds marked on their maps: can they work out with their partner where they may be?
• Explain that the 6 points you have marked on your maps correlate to 6 hidden bird hunt cards. They should work together to read the map to find the cards.
• When they find the cards, they should record on their recording sheet: (differentiated)
HA: The bird’s name and the correct fact (sheet 1), MA: Writing the bird’s name (sheet 2), LA: Circling the bird’s name (sheet 3)Extension: Do the children know any other common UK birds? How are the similar/ different to the birds they have studied today?
