Going from data to theory to analysis
What are the interesting things in the data
Repetitive behaviours Something that strikes you as unusual or that you didnt expect
What theory might help explain this?
General to specific (eg Leadership to Situational Leadership
Theory)
According to the theory, does the manager do this well?
What does this tell you about the strengths and
weaknesses of the theory
In this case
Extrapolate using criticisms of the theory by other authors?

Example
In the interview the manager talks a lot aboutleadership and how they lead
Seems to describe some different ways of leading
You do a search and decide the manager is describing
transformational and transactional leadership styles
You use transformational leadership theory to analyse
the managers behaviour
You find articles that are critical of transformational
leadership as a theory and use these to critical
examine the theory
