Imagine the Possibilities

Jazz, anyone?

What is Pacific Lighthouse?• A research collaboration between UW,

CENIC, providers of digital collections, and school partners

• An on-demand media repository built upon MediaWeb technology, I2 middleware, and the high-performance advanced services networks in California and Washington

• An investigation into the pedagogical uses of digital libraries

Pacific Lighthouse Development Partners

• University of Washington, Educational Partnerships & Learning Technologies

• CENIC (Corporation for Educational Networking in California)

I2 Member Universities

K-20 Networks

K-20 Collaboration

Goals of Pacific Lighthouse• To evaluate the performance of Internet2

technologies (e.g., MediaWeb), and identify issues associated with use

• To determine how teachers and students might use digital collections as primary source materials

• To assess the usefulness of multi-media digital collections for pedagogical purposes

Potential Content Partners

• The ResearchChannel (UW)• Radio stations KEXP (Seattle) and KCRW (Santa

Monica)• The Densho Project and Visual History

Foundation (Survivors of the SHOAH)• California Digital Library (UC)• Conversations with History (UC)• The Jason Project

Potential School Partners

• Aberdeen Schools, WA• Tukwila Schools, WA• Seattle Schools, WA• Tulare County Schools, CA• Pomona Schools, CA• Other CA and WA schools TBA

Parallel Project

• Pacific Lighthouse is a complementary project to Viewing the Future, a video repository aligned with Michigan educational standards that is being created by a partnership between UW and MERIT

Scaling Up

• By means of the SEGP structure, the National Internet2 K-20 initiative will leverage both Pacific Lighthouse and Viewing the Future to provide access to a wide variety of on-demand media first to additional states, and then to the national K-20 community
