FALL 2013-SPRING 2014 SEMESTERS

ABC STUDENT CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINATION

March 5th 2014

ABC Committee,

The Student Construction Association (SCA) has been a student chapter of the Associated

Builders and Contractors (ABC) of the Metro Area since 1988. Since then it has developed into one of the

largest student organizations here at Montgomery College. It is because of our ambition that we are

willing to commit and to serve the community but most importantly to assist the students who are

striving to be successful in the construction industry.

The foundation of the SCA exemplifies the great value of each individual thus empowering each

other to accomplish many endeavors as a team. We have demonstrated our leadership skills extensively

such that we have become an ideological student organization amongst our high school, college, and

industry community.

It has been our honor to be heavily involved with the ABC Metro Washington Chapter during

their many events, fundraisers, and community service projects, which has ultimately ensured us with

many networking opportunities as students and has opened many doors for our near future. Our local

chapter has done a tremendous job of providing us with the necessary tools to help achieve our goals

and in turn we do not hesitate to show our gratitude towards their efforts to do so. We acknowledge

the privilege of representing the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. We hope that with our

nomination we will be able to obtain the 2014 ABC Student Chapter of the Year Award, in recognition of

the passion and success we have presented as a student chapter.

Thank you,

SCA Team Montgomery College

Events & Projects

1.) During the fall semester 12 members from the SCA volunteered at the Annual ABC Metro golf outing in efforts to raise funds for construction related scholarships for all students affiliated with ABC Metro. This experience not only allowed us to show our gratitude towards previous donors but also served as a great networking opportunity for many of us, in ways that the relationships we have built between industry professionals has been a beneficial asset to our future.

2.) On December 7th the SCA hosted its first Annual Appreciation Banquet. This event was intended to bring together SCA members, industry professionals, several ABC Metro Chapter members, and construction management professors to network and commemorate the continuous support that our program and student chapter has received. The program was successful because of the amount of preparation that was directed by the students and for turnout of guests.

3.) This spring semester we coordinated a site visit to a hospital project nearby. Nine students from our chapter and five students from our county technical high school attended. This was a unique experience for the high school students, for it was their first time on a commercial job. We served as mentors for these students through this site visit and hopefully many more. Our relationship with these students in our community gives them exposure. For it’s in our best interest to help the many high school students understand the possible careers and future they can obtain in our industry.
