MAYA’S MILESTONE Transplant recipient reaches her 365

thday post-transplant

The Chamberlin family is

celebrating! Maya Chamberlinhad been diagnosed with a rareblood disease, hemophagocyticlymphocytosis in 2009, and oneyear ago, received a bonemarrow transplant from anunrelated donor. We are happyto report that Maya has showntremendous progress since then,and she and her family continueto adjust to the changes as her health improves. Maya and her donor are making plans to meet in the near future. In the

Josiah is 7-

years-old. He

was

diagnosed

with Wiskott-

Aldrich

Syndrome at 3

months of age

and had a stem cell transplant at

18 months. He is doing well with

his new immune system and

goes for check-ups once a year.

His teachers always report that

he is a very thoughtful and

helpful classmate and has a

great heart.

When Tevita was diagnosed with AplasticAnemia in February, he and his family

could not have been more surprised. Anenthusiastic athlete, the 8-year-old is nowlooking for a marrow donor.His best chance of finding a match willcome from someone of Tongan, Samoan,or Chinese descent. At 0.1%, PacificIslanders are the least represented racialgroup on the National Registry, makingTevita’s search all the more difficult.

AADP and Team Tevita have held several

drives around the Bay Area and Sacramento, including drives atgames for Tevita’s football team. Please continue to spread theword, reach out to Samoan and Tongan communities nationwide,and encourage others to register as potential donors; they maybe the match Tevita needs!

NICO TO RECEIVE TRANSPLANT

Nico Poux was first diagnosed withleukemia while living with his family inFrance. The then six-year-oldunderwent several rounds of chemotherapy and a cord bloodtransplant, eventually leading to

remission. However, this remission wasnot to last. In 2011, shortly after Nicoand his family relocated to California, herelapsed. Family and friendsimmediately set up marrow registrationdrives, hoping to find a match for Nico. Like so many patients though, hismixed racial background meant he was far less likely to find amatch. A match was eventually found and Nico is preparing for a transplant. AADP sends him wishes for a speedyrecovery. Follow Nico’s story at his CaringBridge journal, here.
