Fotheringay i s a two-story b r i c k s t r u c t u r e w i t h a p r o j e c t i n g two-level p r o v i n c i a l type p o r t i c o on the west f r o n t . As o r i g i n a l l y b u i l t , the facade of t h e house was only t h r e e bays wi th t h e p o r t i c o covering t h e f r o n t door i n the southernmost bay. It was a t r a d i t i o n a l ' b e l i e f t h a t t h e facade was intended t o be symnet r ica l . However, t h e house s tood i n i t s o r i g i n a l form u n t i l t h e l a t e -1950 ' s when the south end of the facade was extended f o r two more bays, thus making i t symmetrical. It should be noted t h a t a l l of t h e a r c h i t e c t u r a l d e t a i l s i n t h e o r i g i n a l po r t ion of t h e house, such a s the modi l l ion and d e n t i l co rn ice , Flemish bond brickwork, splayed stuccoed l i n t e l s w i th keystones, e x t e r i o r end chimney and hipped roof were c a r e f u l l y reproduced i n t h e new s e c t i o n .
17. DESCRIPTION -.
A t t h e same time, t h e deep two-story e l l on t h e r e a r of the house was renovated, a l a t e r a d d i t i o n was removed from the r e a r of t h e e l l , and the end r e b u i l t . The p r e s e n t pedimented gable end and l a r g e f an l i g h t window i n the pediment d a t e from t h e r ebu i ld ing . A two-level porch once loca ted on the no r th s i d e o f the e l l was removed e a r l i e r i n t h e century .
CONDITION
I N T E G R I T Y
The o r i g i n a l i n t e r i o r woodwork i n Fotheringay i s most e l a b o r a t e and very f i n e l y executed. The s t a i r h a l l and drawing room f e a t u r e Adamesque decora t ion , i nc lud ing modi l l ion and d e n t i l c o r n i c e s , swags i n t h e en tab la t over the doorways, and reeded c h a i r r a i l s . The drawing room chimney-p iece i s unusual ly r i c h wi th i ts broken pediment overmantle f lanked by carved s c r o l l s . O r i g i n a l woodwork a l s o su rv ives i n t h e u p s t a i r s h a l l and bedrooms. The t r i m i n t h e d in ing room i s l a r g e l y modern but i n t h e s t y l e of t h e house.
Fotheringay i s d ramat i ca l ly s i t u a t e d on a s t e e p k n o l l overlooking the bottom land of t h e south fork of the Roanoke River. Behind t h e k n o l l sha rp ly r i s e the Blue Ridge Mountains, forming a n impressive backdrop f o r t h e house. Against t h e base of t h e mountains and i n view of t h e house s t ands the t r iangular -shaped stone ' tdmb bf Col. Hancock and s e v e r a l members of h i s family.

Fotheringay was probably b u i l t soon a f t e r 1796 when Colonel George Nancock bought t h e proper ty from Colonel Joseph Kent who had acqui red the land i n 1793 from William Robinson whose home and t ave rn were loca ted the re . George Hancock (1754-1820) served a s a Colonel of t h e Vi rg in i a Line i n t h e Revolutionary War and was aide-de-camp t o Count Kasimir Pu lask i . He represented Bo te tou r t County i n t h e Vi rg in i a House of Delegates from 1784 u n t i l 1792,and was t h e f i r s t c i t i z e n of Bote tout t County t o s e r v e i n t h e United S t a t e s Congress, being a member of t h e Third and Fourth United S t a t e s Congress. Colonel Hancock's daughter , J u l i a , married General William Clark of t h e Lewis and Clark Expedit ion.

I ts e l a b o r a t e i n t e r i o r woodwork i s unusual ly f i n e f o r both i t s t i m e and loca t ion .
