Weight gain and itsrepercussions: Fatty liver,elevated liver enzymes, highcholesterol, high BP, high bloodsugar, thyroid problems.Tummy fat is associated withdiseases like: Arthritis, cancer,heart attacks, strokes, asthma. Why does accumulation of fatcause all these problems? Fat is one of the mostmetabolically active tissues wehave. It is a little powerhouse

that makes hormones,enzymes, proteins, and anumber of other things thatplay a central role in themetabolic process. Without fat,we cannot breakdown fat andglucose and protein properly.There are people who have verylittle fat in the body, and thesepeople also develop high bloodsugars, high blood pressure andhigh cholesterol. So while toomuch is bad, too little is alsobad! It is all about balance —having the right amount. Theright amount also needs to bein the right place. Fats thatwomen accumulate aroundtheir hips and bottom may notcause as much problems as thefat in the mid-section. Lifestyle modification : Exerciseand healthy food is a simpleremedy that can take care of allour health problems. In otherwords we should try and getour body fat into balance andmaintain it to ensure a long anda healthy life.

Bangalore: They are laughing all theway to the bank. Many of the Grade12 students of international schoolshave won scholarships worth lakhsof rupees apart from getting admis-sions in reputed universities abroad.

Some of the scholarships rang-ing from $500 to $460,000 will takecare of the entire course, while someare for a particular term.

A major chunk of students havebagged admission in UK and theUnited States, while a few of themgot opportunities in Hong Kongand Singapore. The universities in-clude London School of Economics,Cambridge University, Universityof Leeds, Imperial College London,University of British, University ofWarwick, New York University,Ohio University and University ofPennsylvania.

ENGG IS TOP PRIORITYEngineering tops the list followed byeconomics, law and business man-agement. Interestingly, some stu-dents have opted for physics, chem-istry, optometry, arts and dance, pre-medicine and nanotechnology.

The International School Banga-lore (TISB) saw 95% of students land-ing admissions abroad. “Of the 115 stu-dents, 110 have been admitted. For theremaining students, the process is go-

ing on,” said TISB founder chairmanK P Gopalkrishna.

He pointed out that students ap-ply to the universities from Octo-ber onwards every year. “By March,they will get to know the status oftheir applications.”

THREE LEVELSExplaining that there are three lev-els in admission, he said the first lev-el has scholarships of highestamount which usually caters to the

entire course. “This is based purelyon merit,” he said. At the second lev-el, the scholarship amount is less andtuition fee is waived. And the lastlevel, the students will get admissionto the universities but will not beawarded any scholarship.

“When students apply for admis-sion, the school gives a recommen-dation to universities, highlightingtheir profile. This includes the stu-dent’s capabilities, social service,strong traits, etc.,” Gopalkrishna

said. After processing the applica-tions, the universities inform boththe school and students about thestatus of the application — rejectedor accepted. The school does not con-duct any ‘special coaching’ for ad-missions as “the standard of teach-ing in our school doesn’t requirethat”, he added.

SAME SCENE EVERYWHEREThe scenario is no different at IndusInternational School. It too has

recorded over 95% admissions inuniversities abroad with many ofthem getting scholarships. “We start-ed the process in early March as thepredicted grades are finalized by thistime. We have a placement counsel-lor Caroline Linger, who briefs thestudents on the scholarships. Shetakes care of the entire process. Shealso briefs the students on writingessays and courses,” said Lt Gen Ar-jun Ray, CEO, Indus Trust.

ALL DON’T OPT FOR ITNot all students who study in inter-national schools wish to study abroad.In fact, principals said that some liketo pursue higher studies in India,though the number is negligible.

At Jain International ResidentialSchool, admissions are expected togo on till May 15. Principal of theschool Wg Cdr Ganesh Sharma saidabout 70% of students have alreadygot admissions in universitiesabroad. “Most students have optedfor engineering, medicine and man-agement. We will come to know theexact number only after the processis completed,” he said.

He said that in the past there hasbeen instance where students havecontinued studying with the JainGroup. “Our Group offers variouscourses in management, engineeringand general degree. Many studentscontinue with our institution,” he said.

Requests for converting one-ways totwo-ways and vice-versa keep pour-ing in. Can we allow individual con-

venience to override logic? Whom does theroad belong to? People who live by or thepeople who pass by that road. No one reallyseem to have the answer!

Year 2001 saw the introduction of a num-ber of one-ways; Kempegowda Road, Rich-mond Road, Residency Road, etc, besides traf-fic flow pattern around Hudson Circle. Thesedecisions resulted from well-researched traf-fic volume & flow patterns by BATF, ably sup-ported by transportation experts and not asper whims and fancies of traffic police as peo-ple may believe. To be fair, these changes in-troduced stood the test of time, otherwise,traffic would not have kept moving even asvehicle population increased from 18 to 36lakhs during these nine years without pro-portionate increase in infrastructure.

Contrary to the common perception, traf-fic police does not keep adding one-ways. In

past two years not even one one-way has beenadded the city with 4,000 km road networkand 40,000 junctions. On the contrary, stretch-es like Sarjapur Road, Hosur Road, SheshadriRoad, Jayamahal Road etc., became two-waysagain. Such reverse engineering was possi-ble due to widening of these roads and gradeseparation at junctions. And this time too,changes were supported by empirical dataand traffic flow patterns.

One-ways essentially reduce delays atjunctions by enabling continuous flow asstraight traffic moves concurrently with rightand left turns. Hence vehicles have to stoponly for cross traffic and waiting time at the

signals reduces drastically. The traffic keepsmoving and time taken for journey may beless even though distance actually travelledmay be more; a fact, not relished by envi-ronmentalists & economists due to excessfuel consumption and pollution. Psycholog-ically one feels good as one keeps moving; al-beit not necessarily in direction of destina-tion. Counter-argument, however, is that longwaiting at the junctions may produce simi-lar amount of pollution. The pre-requisitefor introducing one-way is that there mustbe an alternative road for reverse directionof flow, in close vicinity.

Two-ways eliminate extra distance to betravelled but for every right turn, oppositeflow has to stop and this leads to more haltsand longer delays at the signals. Patiencebeing the most scarce virtue among com-muters, it leads to indiscipline, road rage,honking and violations. Too many junctionsbeing the hall-mark of our road networkmultiple signals in close proximity becomeinevitable. Lack of consensus on prohibit-ing right turns aggravates the agony. Two-

way traffic may lead to gridlock as com-muters are tempted to overtake beyond cen-terline and block opposite traffic in the ab-sence of medians.

On the contrary, once widened and ifroads are continued as one-ways, extra widthof the road may become convenient place forparking. Also finding six lanes of road in-stead of three tempts most road users tothrow lane discipline away to wind and re-sort to zigzag movement jeopardizing safetyof everyone. However, without tackling thejunctions by introducing grade separation,eliminating one-ways will not only introducemore signals, increase delays and road ragebut also require more manpower.

The issue of one/two-ways, is intricate-ly linked to progress of road widening andgrade separation and cannot be subject mat-ter of individual choices whether public orpolice. For optimum results, macro-levelplanning rather than micro-level preferenceshave to the be guiding principle.
