What is speed?

• Speed is how fast something is moving.

How do we measure speed?

• Distance traveled per (divided by) amount of time– Ex.) KM/H , Mph, M/S etc.

• Ex.) Cole ran 6 miles in 1 hour, what was his average speed?

• Ex.) Graham drove 120 KMs in 2 hours, What was his average speed?

• Ex.) Julie ran 5 Miles in 0.5 hours, what was her average speed?

• Ex.) Annie drove for 3.4 hours at an average speed of 80 km/h. How far did she go?

• Ex.) Jake drove 60 km/h and went a distance of 354 km. How much time did it take him?

• Ex.) Cole ran 6 miles in 1 hour, what was his average speed?

» 6 ÷ 1 = 6» Cole’s average speed was 6 Mph (miles per hour)

Always put a unit of measurement in your answer!

Always answer in a sentence! (This is not math class!)

Moving

• In order to move you must change your position.

• What is position?

• Position: is the distance and direction from the origin.

• What is the origin?

• Origin: is a reference point where the moving object started.

It moved 2 (two) places to the right.

Any quantity that is described using magnitude (number) and direction is called a vector quantity.

• Displacement: Any change in position

• Displacement is a vector quantity!• Always show it is a vector quantity by

adding an arrow!!

• A scalar is a quantity that is described using only a magnitude (number) and no direction.

In order to know how fast an object is moving, we need to know the time it took for the car to move from one position to another (change in time). An interval of time is the difference between two such clock readings.

• Send toy cars or ping-pong balls down 1 m long ramp and record the movement results!

Acceleration• What is acceleration?• Acceleration: How much an object’s

velocity changes in a certain time.

• P.G. 18 – measure the position of each dot from the origin, also because the dots are so large pick one end of the dot.

• Direction of acceleration

• + is to the right

• - is to the left

• Must also look at the sign of velocity

• If velocity and acceleration have the same sign object is speeding up.

• If velocity and acceleration have opposite signs the object is slowing down.
