ART IN SpringfieldBirthplace of the McKenzie River Drift Boat and Nancy’s Yogurt, hometown of writer Ken Kesey and the one-time “Timber Capital of the World,” Springfield, Oregon is better known for its industrious history and natural beauty than for its artistic accomplishments. But take a self-guided tour of the murals on “Art Alley,” stroll through eclectic galleries and shops, check out world-class sculpture throughout the city or take in a show at the Richard E. Wildish Community Theater, and we’re confident you’ll agree: our city’s rich craft traditions, creative talent and high-caliber art deserve their own spotlight.

2nd FridayArt. Music. Conversation. Rain or shine, downtown shops, galleries

and restaurants play host to a lively walking tour of eclectic art

installations the second Friday of each month. Discover new work,

meet featured artists, catch a demo and enjoy good company and live music along the way. The event is organized by Emerald Art Center; visit emeraldartcenter.org for info.

Art Alley What do Homer Simpson, a giant octopus and Ken Kesey have in common? They all

loom larger than life over the streets of Downtown Springfield! Dubbed “Art Alley”

for the density of works found there, downtown became an arts destination

when the Springfield Arts Commission and City Council

joined forces to sponsor seventeen pieces. A combination of public and private investment has since greatly

expanded the number and type of works to be enjoyed in the area. From the towering murals to the storm drain

art; the prominent outdoor sculptures to the tucked-away galleries in City Hall, you’re

sure to find Art Alley a feast for the eyes.
