2017IRISDataSummit September21,2017AnnArbor,MIEXECUTIVESUMMARYThankyoutothosewhoattendedthe2017IRISDataSummit.Wefoundthediscussionsveryusefulandwritenowtofollowupontherichthreadsofconversation.TurnoutattheSummitwasexcellent:atotalof57representativesfromIRIS,theU.S.CensusBureau,21IRISmemberuniversities,4prospectivememberuniversities,andtheAssociationofPublicLandGrantUniversities(APLU)attendedtheevent.Attendanceatthisyear’sDataSummitincreasedbyaboutathirdoverlastyear’sevent,andrepresenteda49%increaseoverthefirsteventheldin2015.About1in5attendeesatthisyear’seventattendedlastyear’sSummitinWashington,DC.Themeetingagendaandlistofparticipantsareappendedtotheendofthissummary.Presentationslidesarealsoattached.Threebroadthemesemergedfromtheday’sdiscussions:Communicationiscritical.ThepowerofIRISreportsisdiminishediftheyaren’tcommunicatedeffectivelytotherightstakeholders.Athoughtfulgovernancestructurethatincludesadiversesetofrepresentativesfacilitatesgoodcommunication.Ensuringthatreportsreachthepeoplewhocanusethemtotellauniversity’sstorydemandsidentificationofkeyallies,bothinternallyandexternally.Contextualizingthedataisessential.Simplypostingreportsonlineoraspartofalargercompendiumofinstitutionaldatawithnoinformationtohelpputthemincontextisperhapsworsethanprovidingnoinformationatall.AsuniversitiestakestepstosharetheirIRISreportswithkeyconstituents,theymustthinkcarefullyabouthowtoframethemsotheycanbestbeunderstoodincontext.Leveragingthepowerofaggregationshouldbeapriority.IRIShasstrongrelationshipswithanumberofhighereducationassociationssuchastheAssociationofAmericanUniversities(AAU)andtheAssociationofPublicandLand-grantUniversities(APLU),butshouldcontinuetoexpandtoorganizationsliketheCouncilonGovernmentRelations(COGR).Inaddition,IRISshouldexplorewaystocreateaggregatereportsbyconferenceand/orregion.Actionitemsandnextsteps:• Dataupdates:

o IRISwilldevelopamatchreportforthevendorreportthatshowsthedollarsnotmatchedagainsttotaldollarsspent.

o IRISwillcontinuetodevelopitsobjectcodeclassificationsystemtobettercaptureinternalspending.Forthosememberswishingtosubmitnon-federaldata,IRISwillprovideguidance.

o IRISwillpursuetheidentificationandincorporationofnewdatasetsandtoolsthatmightprovidefruitfulintermsofinterestinglinkages,doingsoinwaysthatrequirerelativelylittleworkonthepartofmembers.

o Possibleaggregatereportswillbedeveloped,suchasAAUinstitutions,state/regionlevelreports,etc.

• Toolsandsupport:o IRISwillrefineguidanceformembergovernancetoenhancecommunicationandtobetter

leveragedataproducts.o IRISwillworktomakeTAGmeetingdiscussionsmoretransparentbymakingmeeting

summariesavailableintheIRISportal.• Overall:

o MembershipinIRISisgrowingandthismustcontinue;IRISleadershipwillcontinuetopursuenewmemberstoenablethekindofaggregationthatwillpermitmorepowerfulreporting.

UniversitieshaveavarietyofreasonsforwantingtojoinIRIS,andtheyeachfaceuniquechallengesinprovidingthedataandinusingthereportstheygetbackfromIRIS.Forexample,someinstitutionsjoinbecausetheyhavebeendirectedtodosobyapresident,andtheindividualstaskedwithmakingithappenmaynotbequitesurehowtobestutilizetheIRISresource.Thispanelwillfocusonwaystoachievegreaterinstitutionalbuy-in,enhancedataproducts,andplayaroleinmakingIRISatrulynationalresourceforuniversities.Weaimtoaddressatleastsomeofthefollowingquestions:
