2001 Sci-Fi

by 2011touch-less technology is on the market

In the meantime

• 2009 - Opera starts developing widgets• 2010 - Microsoft’s Kinect for XBOX 360 –

– gesture, motion, facial, voice, emotion recognition

• http://youtu.be/p2qlHoxPioM - voice, emotion recognition• http://youtu.be/CPIbGnBQcJY - onscreen interaction dance lessons –

movement recognition• http://youtu.be/M-wLOfjVfVc - Microsoft Kinect• http://youtu.be/62wj8eJ0FHw - gaming • http://youtu.be/l6Dzzeoy8Tk - Star Wars with MS Kinect for XBox360

Think about kids growing up with this technology

By the time they start school at the age of 7, they’ll have had their brains totally rewired

They will have had, for at least 5 years before school, full control of their 3D reality

manipulation gadgets

Schools, including universities, are slow to adopt radical changes.

And it is not a money issue

but …

… us, the teachers

To avoid this situation…

We need

• to start thinking about content in more engaging ways

• to implement research findings• to re-think the roles of students

and teachers

Difficulties

• Concentration• Immersion/distraction• Surfing books• Staccato reading• Working on paper• Checking ‘incoming’• Copy, Paste, Ctrl+F, Esc, F1, Undo in real life• Travel problems• Hard to stop

the aforementioned will not be a problem for the ‘new learner’ by the time he gets into University

Right now, we’ve got to deal with the learners in transition, using the tools and skills we have at

hand in order to catch up with them

Instructional Theories to consider

COGNITIVIST view• Information Processing - G. Miller

– T.O.T.E. and Chunking• Level of processing - Craik and Lockhart • Dual coding – Paivio• Component Display - M. D. Merill• Elaboration Theory - C. Reigeluth • Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning – R. Mayer• Cognitive Load Theory of Multimedia Learning - J. Sweller

– Intrinsic, extraneous, germane• Cognitive fit - I. Vessey
