19th Century

Years in Stone

this book and its contents are copyright © 2009 by glen kaltenbrun

an introduction

Cemeteries are among my favorite places to visit.

To a great extent, they are places of history and artistry but, for me, they are places of

untold stories and of connection to another time and place.

The stories - usually no more than hinted at on the stones - might involve infant sisters

who died eight years apart (plates 26 and 31); a person who died on that most festive of

days, Christmas; or another who left a stone with only their first name.

Nineteenth century stones is the subject of this book because that time is sufficiently

remote for lives to have been dramatically different from ours, but also close enough for

me to have had direct experience with "residents" of that century (my grandparents were

all born within fifteen years of the end of the American Civil War).

To add context, I've included an event that took place in the birth or death year in each

photograph.

This book - 19th Century Years in Stone - results from participation in the

second Solo Photo Book Month [aka SoFoBoMo] from mid-May to early June 2009.

The goal of SoFoBoMo is to produce a PDF book of at least 35 new photographs in 31

days.
