PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—WEEK 3 What a wonderful day we had for our annual Mother’s
Day Fete. The sun was shining, the food was delicious,
the kids were having fun and everyone was smiling. On
behalf of the staff and students I would like to thank
all the wonderful people who attended the Armidale
City Fete last Saturday. The Fete was a huge success.
Although we do not yet have a final amount that was
raised we are expecting it to be similar to previous
years. We will announce the total as soon as we have a
better idea.
A very special thank you to the fete coordinators –
Leanne Cooper and Katrina Llewellyn and the
numerous parents who supported them at meetings,
collecting prizes, and by running stalls and activities.
I would also like to pay tribute to the many students
and staff who helped out at the fete - your service
was invaluable. The K-2 dancers were wonderful and
it was great to see so many older students, parents
and grandparents get into the swing of the fete and
join the dancers. Pete Stanley and his crew once
again provided great entertainment. Pete has
promised to be back next year bigger and better than
ever.
Our school is indeed very fortunate to have such a
dedicated parent community who work together
alongside staff and the wider community to ensure
our school is well equipped and a happy place to be. I
am very proud to be relieving principal of a school
where the culture of respect and caring shows
through in everything we do.
I would also like to thank the many, many sponsors
who donated prizes and gifts for the fete. Without
their enormous help the fete would not enjoy the
success it does.
NAPLAN
This week the students of Years 3 and 5 are sitting
the NAPLAN tests. The results will be available
somewhere around August. The data that the school
receives is invaluable in assisting us to plan our
curriculum delivery into the future and is the basis
for targets in our Annual School Report.
School Attendance
This Friday, the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO)
will be visiting our school to conduct the termly check
of class rolls and student attendance. The role of the
HSLO officer is to work with schools, students and
parents to ensure all students are attending school
regularly. From time to time, the HSLO officer will
contact parents if a student’s absences are

significant or if students have a high rate of partial
absences due to late arrival at school each morning.
Students with significant absences can be placed on a
monitoring program to ensure they attend school each
day. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure
children attend school daily from 9.10am to 3.10 each
day. Parents are also required to supply an explanation
for all student absences. Parents are able to access an
absentee note from our website or may phone the
school to explain a student’s absence. Partial absences
also require an explanation and parents are required to
bring their child to the office for a late note if they
are not at school by bell time in the morning.
2013 Eisteddfod Events
This year our school has entered the Senior Choir and
the K-2 Choir in the Eisteddfod. The events involving
our students are on Tuesday 28 May for the K-2 Choir
and Wednesday 29 May for the Senior Choir. The K-2
Choir will perform at 9.45am at Lazenby Hall at the
UNE and the Senior Choir will perform at 9.00am at
Lazenby on the Wednesday. Parents are invited to come
along and watch the events. Further details will be sent
home next week outlining the organisation for each
event.
Needed urgently
The school piano is in desperate need of tuning. If any
parent has knowledge of a piano tuner who is willing to
donate their services we would be most grateful.
Sporting success
Congratulations to Henry Sindel and Mangarchot
Maluach who attended the national trials for basketball
last week in Sydney. Both boys performed well and
Mangarchot, who has only recently joined our school,
was successful in securing a position in the National
team and will now compete in Perth in August.
Congratulations also to the boy’s rugby union team who
played in the trials last Friday. Henry Sindel, Toby
Cooper, Howard Broadbent and Oliver Broadbent
were successful in moving to the next level which is the
Zone Trials which will be held next Friday.
Reminder – School Council meeting next Monday 24 May
at 7.00pm.

What an excellent session of You-Can-Do-It we had yesterday!! It is the first time we have had it for the year and the new Year Six group leaders were so excited to finally get their groups. The system has changed slightly this year: instead of having the children from previous You-Can-Do-It groups in the same groups, the teachers have picked entirely new bunches of children. Yesterday’s lesson was about bullying and what the 4 types are - body, mind, voice and group. The children were taught how to identify bullying and how to deal with it. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait for the next lesson!
By Annie Worthing Yesterday the Year 6 students ran
their first ‘Getting Along’ group.
Each Year 6 student worked
through the first session of an
Anti-bullying program with their
team members. The focus of the
lesson was to define bullying. Each
group completed a series of games
and activities which were aimed at
building relationships and help to
get to know each other. When
walking around the school, it was
great to see all children interacting
and engaging in conversation and
laughter. A huge thank you to Mrs
MacGregor for her organisation of
the lessons and to the Year 6
teachers for helping each
Year 6 student prepare for
the session. The next
session for the peer
leaders will be in Week 5.
Yesterday was our first peer support/You Can DO It! (YCDI) Program. The program was about learning to get along and to learn about bullying. We were told to let the kids explain to
their leaders (Year 6) about what bullying is about. My group was very good and they revised about three different ways of bullying, but they accidently left one out so I helped them remember it. Some Year Six’s were either sick or were away, so some of the Year Five’s stepped up to take their spot but if there wasn’t a Year Five student another leader would have to stand up and take two groups like me, which I really enjoyed even though I was a bit nervous at the start.

Fete Evaluation
What a great atmosphere we had at this year’s fete! Now it’s all over we would love to hear what everyone
thought of this year’s fete. We need to know what you liked, what you didn’t like and what can be done
differently. This feedback is essential for improving our fete year after year, so please take a little time to
let us know.
Tell us about stalls, displays, entertainment – what was good and what was not so good.
Let us know about the drop off of goods, stage prize/gift allocations and the general organisation of the fete.
Timing of when things went out (eg raffle tickets, posters, lucky dip bags, beautiful bags, cake trays, meetings
etc)

This can be anonymous if you wish; we just want to hear what everyone has to say so that our fete can get bigger
and better each year.
Thank you to everyone that made our fete possible. It was an amazing team effort, which will reflect in the
resources we will be able to provide for our wonderful children.
