|WELCOME TO MA RY QUEEN OF HEA VEN IN ELM HU RST, IL 2
In the Gospel this weekend, we hear Jesus say, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirt, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This missionary charge is often referred to as the “great commission.” These are our marching orders as a Church. To be commissioned is to be given the authority to act for, on behalf of, or in place of another. Jesus commissions, gives us as a Church, the authority to all act as
missionaries on his behalf. The continuation of the work He began is entrusted to us who follow as His final teaching before Ascending to the Father.
On this Memorial Day weekend, the very word “commissioned” evokes military connotations as well. Officers are commissioned to exercise authority on the battlefield. Authority is given to them not just to command troops, but to be responsible for their well-being and protection. Their commission extends to protecting the citizens of the country for which they fight as well. Memorial Day is a day to remember the heroic sacrifices made by those who gave their lives for us. We could not be there to fight the battle, but we are blessed to enjoy the freedoms they fought to protect for us. We owe them our prayers of gratitude. We are blessed to live in a time of peace.
The commission is given to us to use our freedoms well, not for our own interest or happiness, but to continue the hard work of nurturing a society where freedom and dignity is respected. God willing, we will never face wartime, but we can take up the cause of defending our country every day, by using the blessings of freedom and prosperity well. In doing so, we will honor the memory and sacrifices of those who gave so much for each of us.
Dear Lord, on this day, we remember those who have served us by protecting our freedoms. As we celebrate our long weekend with our friends and family, help us remember, that our freedom to speak of you, and our freedom to worship you, and our freedom to do that which we ought to do, have all been bought at the price and sacrifice of many lives. Your Son died for our eternal life in heaven. So too, your children died protecting us here on earth. Help us be mindful this weekend and always of the sacrifices made by those in uniform for all our freedoms.
May God bless America and grant eternal rest to those who laid down their lives for their country. Amen. Fr. Jason

CATECHIST NEEDED Parents, have you considered being a catechist or a catechist helper in your child’s RE class? Think of the bonding between you and your child as you lead the class. Your child would love to give you feedback on activities and plans for RE; you have a built-in advisor, critic, and little Christian to help you plan at home! Call Jo at the REO if you are interested in being a catechist or catechist helper for the next school year.
CATECHIST HELPERS NEEDED As a catechist helper, you are the extra set of eyes and helping hands during class. Helping the catechist pass out materials, encouraging the kids to stay focused and engaged, and sending the attendance to the REO are vital ways of giving of your time during RE.
SUBSTITUTE CATECHISTS Substitute catechists are needed during the year. At times a catechist’s need to be absent is known in advance, and other times it is due to sudden sickness. If you would like to be a substitute, call Jo at the REO. Lesson plans would be in place for you.
