2. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CAREER PLANNINGYour Apprenticeship will prepare you so that you can plan for your
own learning and development, as well as your achievements. You
will also think about your career path and identify any possible
opportunities that may be open to you, either within your current
organisation or outside of it.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDINGNow that you have outlined the components of your Apprenticeship
programme, you will consider your current level of knowledge and
skills. You will consider how you can build upon this and what you
need to do to continuously improve and increase your employability.
The secret to a successful transition from one job to another, or one
employer to another, is to develop your basic knowledge and skills.
You are going to begin the process of looking at your career path
and thinking about the opportunities you may want to take as your
career develops. You will also consider the information you will
need so that, if you want to continue with study or other professional
development, you can act quickly when the time arrives. For
example, it may be that you do not wish to continue to do an
Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship, but prefer to take opportunities
available to you in your organisation.
In the following activities, your assessor will complete an individual
learning plan with you. This will list all the components of your
Apprenticeship Framework that you are working towards. It will
also show your planned target dates to complete them. These dates
will be agreed between you and your assessor. It is important to set
realistic dates that you will be able to meet.
You will consider the importance of obtaining feedback on your
performance from your team members, including your manager.
You will consider a ‘strengths and weaknesses, opportunities
and threats’ (SWOT) analysis. You will also complete a personal
development plan (PDP) that sets targets for meeting both your
work-related and your personal objectives in order to help you
achieve your career aspirations.
You need to think about how you can progress beyond your
Apprenticeship programme. You can talk to your assessor
about what is available to you after you have completed your
Apprenticeship, and/or go to agencies and websites for more
information. These may include Connexions, Job Centre Plus, your
college or training provider website, Apprenticeship website and
so on.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
You will need to think about
your career path and the
opportunities you may want to
take as your career progresses.

could complete.

Use the sample SWOT table below to produce your own
SWOT analysis.
My strengths My weaknesses
Job opportunities Job threats
Task 3c
Has your SWOT analysis changed your learning and development
needs? If yes, how have they changed? If not, why not?
Task 4
You should now be aware of areas of your knowledge, development
and skills related to your job role that you would like to improve.
This could be as a result of the activities in this section or staff
appraisal or feedback. A personal development plan (PDP) can also
be a useful tool to assist you with the process of identifying your own
training needs.
Task 4a
Using the template that follows, prepare a PDP. An example of how
to fi ll out this table has been provided in the fi rst row.
Your input will help you to identify your training needs by
highlighting those skills or areas of knowledge you wish to update,
acquire or improve. (You may wish to talk to your Human Resources
department, who may have conducted a skills audit in your
organisation and could be a good source of advice.)

Any good objective should be written in a ‘SMART’ way. When you
devise your development objectives for the activity above, please
talk to your assessor if you are unsure of how you might do this.
The acronym SMART stands for:
S – Specifi c
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Timely
During your PDP meeting with your manager, you will discuss
both work-related and personal objectives. Setting work-related
objectives provides the opportunity to help you with meeting the
demands of your job, whereas setting personal objectives will
motivate you and may help with promotion.

EVIDENCE GATHERING In this activity, you will identify relevant paperwork that you will
complete with your assessor as part of your Apprenticeship
programme. This evidence will help you to demonstrate how you
have prepared for your Apprenticeship.
You need to gather evidence that demonstrates that you can identify
types of activities to improve your personal and professional
development. You need to demonstrate that:
• you have completed an individual learning plan and a personal
development plan with SMART targets
• you understand the process of:
identifying a career goal
researching the career goal
checking your existing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities
and threats
identifying steps to achieve your goal
reviewing your progress towards your goal.
Your assessor will help you to identify these items of evidence.
Examples of documentation that you may consider are given in the
table opposite.

of knowledge and understanding of the BTEC Intermediate Level 2
Apprenticeship in Hospitality that you are just starting.

Your assessor will plan the content of your professional discussion
and will advise you in order to help you prepare beforehand. The
professional discussion may cover more than this section of your
Assessment Workbook.
Discussion process
The discussion process will give you the opportunity to confi rm
that you are aware of every part of the BTEC Intermediate Level 2
Apprenticeship in Hospitality that you have agreed to work towards.
It will also allow you to show that you understand the importance
of completing each part of your Apprenticeship on time and the
purpose of the documents you have completed with your assessor.
You may use the evidence gathered so far as the basis for discussion
with your assessor.
To prepare for your professional discussion, you should think about
how you could talk about topics such as those listed on page 15.
Your assessor will advise you
about how to prepare for your
professional discussion.
