Making Disciples
...Changing
the World
O U R M I S S I O N
S T A T E M E N T :
F I R S T N O T E S
Over the almost elevenyears that I have served aspastor of Trinity LutheranChurch I have come torecognize more and more howit takes every personevery personevery personevery person in theparish, doing his or her job,
to make Gods ministryhappen. Focusing onmobilizing the saints forministry means that the lengthand depth and breadth of theSpirits work in the world ismultiplied exponentially.Imagine it, if every person whois a part of the congregationgets out there and uses theirparticular gifts for the king-dom of God, we as a people ofGod, are making a collectivedifference in the world thatthe pastor alone cannot make.It was never meant to be the
pastors ministry. . . it is thework of the people, the liturgyin the world, so to speak. Thiskind of grassroots, down toearth, communal thinking andbeing takes a complete shiftaway from our cultural normswhich dictate autonomy andself-reliance and success thatcan be measured andreported.
So then, on to my mainpoint which is that when aministry happens, even if it is
the brainchild of just oneperson, it takes many, manydisciples to make it happen. One person has to bepresent to answer the phonewhile others are planningand executing the plans.
(Answering the phone is abig deal because it rings ALLthe time.) One person has tothink through the details.Details are important, otherwise we waste precioustime working through thekinks when we could bedoing. ManyManyManyMany people needto be praying for the soil tobe fertile and open to theSpirits work as we ventureonto paths unknown. Othershave to pick up certain slackin the system to free upothers to do what they do.
We are all in this TOGETHER!We are all in this TOGETHER!We are all in this TOGETHER!We are all in this TOGETHER!When a ministry happens, itis not just the visible peoplewho are doing Gods work;mission is heavily dependentupon those behind thescenes doing what they do tomake the path straight andsmooth to accomplish theobjective. Even if we arentparticularly interested in oneministry (maybe it isntwhere our passion or giftsare) we still support that
ministry in prayer andencouragement, recognizingthat it is meeting a need inthe community and it isSpirit-led. That is a vital partof all that we do: supportand encouragement.
Now, I know that you knowall of this. Its not rocketscience. However, some-times I think in the churchthat we fail to see the truthin all of this; the way thatGod works to use everysingle one of us workingtogether, in tandem, side byside, to accomplish his holywill. Its not about me. Itsnot about you. Its about theworld that God loves and thepeople God loves. And weare so very blessed to get tobe a part of it all every single
day of our lives. We can never do this thing
called mission alone. Buttogether with Christ, we cando amazing and wonderfulthings. Let us put aside anyspirit of competition andembrace the collectiveministry that Christ hasentrusted to us for the sakeof the good news.
Have a very blessed day!
