your pArKs Levies mAKiNG A more LivABLe CityFrom 2001 to 2008, the highly successful Pro Parks Levy
provided $198 million to improve and expand parks throughout
Seattle’s neighborhoods. The Levy played an integral role in
creating and sustaining successful, vibrant and engaging places
for the citizens of Seattle. • Recognizing the need to continue
investment in green spaces as Seattle grows in both population
and density, the Seattle City Council convened the Parks and
Green Spaces Levy Citizens’ Advisory Committee in the spring of
2008 to recommend a fiscally sound and diverse list of projects
to present to the public. Dedicated community organizations
and individuals mounted a grass roots effort to pass the 2008
Parks and Green Spaces Levy by an impressive 59% vote on
November 7, 2008. The new Levy provides $146 million over six
years, including neighborhood and green space acquisitions and
development projects such as new improved playfields, reservoir
lid parks, forest and stream restoration, community gardens,
and renovated playgrounds throughout Seattle.

DiG iN, Get iNvoLveDSeattle Parks and Recreation is dedicated to soliciting citizen input and
providing clear, timely information about the Parks and Green Spaces
Levy projects in your neighborhood.
Once funding for a Levy project is in place, Parks will assign a project
manager. The project manager coordinates the planning and public
involvement process for the project. To guide these efforts, the project
manager creates a Public Involvement Plan that outlines activities
for informing community members of opportunities to learn about the
project and express their views, ideas, and concerns.
Watch your mailboxes, seattle.gov/parks web site, your local paper,
and bulletin boards at the community centers or on-line for notices
indicating upcoming projects. If you want to be notified of a project in
your neighborhood email Karen O’Connor at karen.o’connor@seattle.gov
to be put on a specific project email notification list.

A leTTeR from The SuPeRiNTeNdeNTParks have always been important. With the slowdown in the economy, and unemployment rates reaching new levels, community centers, parks, greenspaces, trails, beaches, playgrounds, ballfields and other community gathering places are more important than ever.
Community centers provide places to gather, learn and participate in your community. Parks provide refuge from the stress of everyday life in an urban environment. They offer an array of recreation opportunities for families. They make available inexpensive options for keeping fit and staying healthy. They teach our children to value and protect the natural environment.
The 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy supports the community by investing in the precious resource of public open space. The Levy supports families by building and preserving a top notch park system for our children. And it helps get people working right now by providing jobs.
My hope is that you will join me in helping shape the future of Seattle park’s and open spaces through your participation. I encourage you to attend a public meeting. Apply for Opportunity Fund money to improve a park in your neighborhood. Volunteer to install playground equipment. We can’t do this successfully without you. Get involved.
I look forward to an ongoing partnership with you. Timothy GallagherSuperintendentTimothy.Gallagher@seattle.gov

seAttLe pArKs FouNDAtioNSince 2001, the Seattle Parks Foundation has improved, expanded, and created more than 27 parks and green spaces throughout Seattle. Through fund raising, partnerships, and advocacy, the Parks Foundation engages public and private resources to make good parks great. As a leader in helping to pass the Parks and Green Spaces Levy, the Seattle Parks Foundation will continue to be an independent partner with the City and community groups. If your organization does not have 501(c) 3 status and would like to partner with the Parks Foundation on a levy project, please call 206-332-9900 or visit www.seattleparksfoundation.org.
projeCt FuNDiNG Each project has a specific budget intended to cover all planning, design, construction, and related costs. The scope of each project must fit within the budget. If the community wants to expand the project beyond the allocated budget, Parks will work with you to seek additional funding. Parks hopes to acquire grants to expand the buying power of many of the property acquisition efforts. Inflation adjustments are available in each project category to compensate for inflation-related costs in the future years of the program.
We at Parks work hard to integrate your feedback into these projects. Each project will undergo an individual public process, and your input is crucial to the success of the project. We look forward to working with you on the direction of these improvement projects over the next six years and beyond.
