Background: the crane contents of mechanical mechanism responsible of moving trolley frame. This mechanism is A.C motor, reducer, wire rope drum, and drum pedestal bearing.Fig.01

Fig.011. Motor 2.Reducer 3.Drum4. Drum pedestal bearing

Problem: drum pedestal bearing not accept grease, the bearing should be lubricate from top of its housing.Fig02

Fig.02Drum pedestal bearing, greasing nipple location

Bearing and housing details: bearing type spherical roller bearing, bearing number 22226 C/W33, bearing dimension is 130x230x64. Bearing housing as shown in Fig.03

Fig.03Bearing and bearing housing drawing

Checking and finding: after dismantle the top cover of the housing, we found the bearing without outer groove and also without greasing holes. The bearing number 22226 C/W33, and W33 it mean that; the bearing with a lubrication groove and “3” lubrication holes at the outer ring, but this is not the existing condition.Fig.04

Conclusions:

Preliminary detect of bearing greasing problem.

Keeping open line and contact between greasing technicians and their supervisors.

Prevent failures of bearing before happened.

Awareness sessions for maintenance technicians about the relation between bearing housing and bearing type.

Machinery erection technicians also should be understood the behavior and path of bearing lubrication to early detect any problems during erection stage.

Preliminary mechanical designers should be aware by this example.
