Man Made Boards

Benefits of Man Made Boards

A common reason for using engineered wood instead of plain wood is its resistance

to cracking, shrinkage, twisting/warping, and its general high degree of strength. It

has replaced many dimensional lumbers on construction applications for these

reasons.

Availability – Can be purchased in large sheet form to unified sizes.

Economy – More economical in cutting. Waste factors are lower.

Quality – Consistent quality throughout. No defects.

Plywood

Plywood is made from thin layers of timber called veneers. The veneers are glued together

to form boards. There is normally an odd number of veneers with the grain alternating

across and along the sheet, which gives both strength and stability to the board.

Plywood Grade Table

Plywood is graded according to the type of glue used in its manufacture and also according

to the situation in which it will be used.

The grade is usually stamped on the board by the manufacturer.

Laminated Boards

Laminated boards are made from strips of wood laminated together and sandwiched

between two veneers.

Chipboard

Chipboard is made from compressed wood chips and wood flakes bonded with a synthetic

resin glue. There are various grades, which include those used to make floor panels etc.
