People taggingPeople tagging A form of social bookmarking that enables people to

organize their contacts into groups Contacts or people are labeled or “tagged” with

keywords Keywords or “tags” relate to a subject matter or

expertise E.g. A tag for a doctor might read:

Surgeon Doctor MD Heart Cardiovasular

IBM’s FringeIBM’s Fringe

PurposePurpose

385,000 employees > 1.5 million directory hits per day

Only 40% of profiles have been updated in the previous 9 month period

© 2008 Prescient Digital Media

Not For Distribution or reproduction without written consent – violators will be prosecuted 41

How it worksHow it works Fringe profiles display contact information and

automatically generated information from the directory as well as

Communities that they belong to Blog entries Bookmarked pages (from their social bookmarking

tool, Dogear) When you tag someone, they can tag you back (forcing

extra diligence and consideration) Authors of a tag are displayed when hovering over a tag An outgoing tag cloud shows which tags a person has

applied to another No private or hidden tags Search for people or experts by tag (subject matter)

Why it worksWhy it works

“These tags often tend to be both more current and more complete than automatically generated or owner supplied classifications.

“People-tagging has a valuable side benefit: it enables the community to collectively maintain each others interest and expertise profiles.”

Why?Why?

BT views social media tools as a huge opportunity to transform the way employees interact

Prior to, over 4,000 of its employees voluntarily joined a Facebook group called ‘BT’

No anonymous posting

“Many believe that trying to stop social media tools seeping onto intranets is a futile activity anyway, so it is better to introduce them on your terms in a managed way.”

Lessons learntLessons learnt Focus on value not risk! Start anywhere … start immediately Start small and build slowly – follow the energy of yes through

the network We learn what works by doing the work … so … …let users try as early as possible – ‘warts and all’ – succeed or

fail quickly … and cheaply! Engage legal/HR/security early… and emphasise evolution not

revolution Have realistic expectations … the intranet is not the internet! Harness the enthusiasm of the enthusiastic … especially if

senior Sometimes … ‘the only form of transportation is a leap of faith’!

… proceed until apprehended!

“If you don’t think about what value you can deliver in an enterprise 2.0 environment, you are going to become irrelevant!!!”
