Got a leaking boiler? Here is what to do!

If you have a leaking boiler, start by calling Boiler Repair Services Cheltenham and get a emergency call out booked in! You next need to ensure that the leak is not going to cause any further damage or pose a risk to you and your family; here is what you should do:

1) If the leak is containable, put a container under the leak to help catch the leak, if the container is filling quickly grab some old towels and rags to help soak up the water and reduce/prevent water damage.

2) If it is safe to do so and there is no water over the electrical isolation switch to the boiler, ensure you have dry hands and isolate the electrical supply. The boiler should be connected to a fuse spur switch or on a plug and pushed.

3) If it is not safe to isolate here, then go to the consumer unit (trip switches) and isolate the circuit here, if you cannot identify the circuit then isolate the power to your home. You should isolate here if water is running over electrical points such as sockets.

4) If you have time, fill some containers with water to make drinks, wash etc.

5) Go to the stop cock for the property and isolate the water supply, usually this is located under the kitchen sink or in a downstairs toilet/bathroom. If you have a basement it may be located down there. If this valve is seized then you may be able to find an isolation tap under a small square hatch on the pavement outside your property or in a maintenance room if you have flats.

6) Depending on the system and what on the boiler is leaking the leak may stop immediately, however it could take some time to stop, if the leak is slow in stopping you should ensure that any containers are emptied regularly until the leak stops.

7) Wait for the professionals!

Once a Boiler Repair Services Cheltenham has attended they will repair/isolate the leak, test for safety and reinstate you water and electrics. At no point should you turn either water or electricity back on until it is safe to do so, not only is this dangerous, it could cost you more money in additional repairs.
