FABRIC AND FIBRES FOR TIRE

PROMILA CHOWDHURYJUTE AND FIBRE TECHNOLOGYROLL NO.14

INTRODUCTIONTire cord fabrics are used as reinforcingmaterials and designed to keep tires in shapeand support vehicle weight, having significantimpact on tire performance. The tire cord fabric is comprised of warpcords oriented in the longitudinal directionand weft yarns oriented in the lateraldirection. The warp cords are used inreinforcing pneumatic tires.

STRUCTURE OF TIRE CORD FABRIC

PARTS OF TIRES

•Beads are two rings that are made of steel wire andencased in rubber. They hold tire assembly on to therim.

•Body Plies is rubberized fabric and cords wrapped around beads. It Form carcass or body of the tire.

•Tread is outer surface of the tire that contacts the road.

•Sidewall is outer part of the tire that extends from the bead to the tread. Marking on the sidewall provides the information about the tire.

•Liner thin layer of rubber that is bonded to the inside of the plies. It provides a leak proof membrane for tubeless tires.

•Belts used to strengthen the body plies  and and stiffen the tread. They lay between the tread and plies.

TYPES OF TIRE BASED ON DESIGN

• Bias/Cross ply /Diagonal Tire

• Bias belted tire/Semi radial tire

• Radial tire

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TIREBASED ON FIBRE

• Nylon Tire Cord

• Polyester Tire Cord

• Rayon Tire Cord

• Steel Tire Cord

PROPPERTIES REQUIRED FOR TIRE CORD

High tenacityHigh cut resistanceGood impact resistanceGood flex figure resistanceGood thermal StabilityCapability to strongly bond with the rubberLow elongation and low moisture regainSome other properties like dimensional stability and elastic recovery.

NYLON USED AS A TIRE CORD FIBRE• Nylon is used first in aircraft tires where toughness and light weight were the important parameters.

• DISADVANTAGE• Fiber and rubber bonding problem.• Flatspotting• Poor dynamic performance• Thermal instability

DISADVANTAGE OF STEEL CORD

• High weights

• Possible moisture corrossion

• USE

• Radial tyres for truck

VISCOSE AS TIRE CORDADVANTAGE

• High breaking strength compared to cotton and good thermal stability.

• Withstand temperature 120‐130⁰C

DISADVANTAGE

• High hygropicity, great loss of strength when wet.

POLYESTER AS A TIRE CORD

• Polyester tyres became very successfull in passenger cars but not for aircraft or heavy goods vehicles.

• Polyester is the least expensive material in tire cord, and so it is the most extensively used fibre throughout the world for car tyres.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS OF TIRE CORD FABRIC

• For high load lifting capacity cord is made for steel yarn.

• Cord is manufactured of glass fibers in some countries.

• In recent years, cushion cord fabric for these tire is usually made from stiff fibers with the minimum elongation.
