Nobody Around Here Cares
But Me . . . JM Lynch Training
Nobody Cares . . .
Warning!
This training material REALLY takes on the
cause of the ‘nobody around here cares
but me’ syndrome.
If you proceed you may not like what
you hear because we’re going to be
REALLY HONEST!
Continue with Caution!
Is This The Right Seminar for
Your Situation?
Variations on the theme of
„Nobody Cares‟:• “If I don‟t do it, no one else will”
• “I wish they‟d see through my eyes”
• “There‟s no concern for quality”
• “I don‟t think anyone is even trying‟
• “I feel like the only one working”
If you‟re saying anyone of the above,
this is the right training for you.
3 Causes of Nobody Cares . . .
1. Poor Hiring Decision
2. Management Style
3. YOU need to look at your
„what got you here‟ style (we‟ll cover this last one in greater detail towards
the end, so don‟t worry – yet!)
Poor Hiring Decision
One of the most important parts of
your job as owner/manager is hiring
the right person.
If you don‟t have the „right people
on the bus‟* then you‟re pushing a
stone up a long, steep hill.
But don‟t fire anyone just yet . . .
* Jim Collins, Good to Great
Poor Hiring Decision
Strategic Firing is a tool that can be very helpful
when executed well, or it can backfire.
Possible Consequences:
• Lawsuit, if wrongful termination can be
determined
• Unemployment compensation payout
(indefinitely, almost)
• Culture and Morale Risks
• They could have been saved
• It might also be the best thing for them
In this
training
we‟ll deal
with these
last 3. The
others are
„obvious‟.
Poor Hiring Decision
The damage to culture and morale is in both
camps: keeping them or letting them go.
If you keep them, and they‟re part of the 12% of
employees surveyed who are „actively disengaged‟*, or
those who are so unhappy that they feel a need to make
others around them unhappy, then they‟re spreading
cancer and it needs to stop.
If you keep them because they bring in a lot of sales, or
because you‟ve got other reasons, personal or
otherwise, everyone knows it and sees you as weak or insincere; they won’t trust your leadership.
*Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, The Power of Full Engagement
Poor Hiring Decision
The damage to culture and morale is in both
camps: keeping them or letting them go.
If you let them go without trying to save them or
rehabilitate them, you‟re possibly opening a swinging door
where your way of dealing with employees who are „stuck‟
will be to replace them.
„Good‟ employees will see a culture without loyalty and
either keep their heads down, avoid risk and therefore play
at less than 100%. It sets up an „us against management‟
wall that is already part of the workplace concept. It means even your best people will circulate their resumes.
Poor Hiring Decision
They Could Have Been Saved
The cost of replacing an employee, searching, interviewing, training, bringing
up to speed, not to mention any interruption of
service to clients, according to general HR rule of
thumb, approximately 100 to 150% of employee‟s
base salary.
Don‟t you think it‟s worth it to try and save them?
Poor Hiring Decision
They Could Have Been Saved
Possible Tactics to „Save‟ an employee:
• Review their original hiring documentation. What did you think they‟d be like? Did you hire a „mule‟ because they‟d
be easy to manage and now you expect a „mustang‟?
• Change their responsibility or manager; is it circumstantial?
• Create a 360 degree feedback review and really listen to
what they have to say.
• Hire an outside coach to do an employee seminar. This
one may be a bit self-serving, but the cost of a 10-week
lunchtime seminar can pay for itself 5-10 times in increased
production and lowered turnover costs.
• Take a minute to pause this training and consider ways you
might „save‟ employees who have promise . . .
