Introduction

• The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, followed by the 2012 Paralympics Games from 29 August to 9 September.

• This will be the third time London has hosted the games having also done so in 1908 and 1948.

• The 2012 Olympics will take place in new venues as well as using existing and historic facilities

• This presentation shows some of the attractions the visitors to the Olympics can see.

Getting Around London

• London Underground (The Tube)

• Docklands Light Rail (DLR)

The London Eye • You can see around 40KM (25

miles) from the top as far as Windsor Castle on a clear day

• Each rotation takes about 30 minutes. The capsule travels at 26cm per second

• The circumference of the wheel is 424m

• The height of the London Eye is 135m (equivalent to 64 red telephone boxes piled on top of each other)

Big Ben • Big Ben is the giant bell in

the belfry of the Clock Tower at the Palace of Westminster

• The clock is The Great Westminster Clock

• There are 334 steps from the belfry to the ground. It would you 30 minutes to climb up if you were fit

Wembley Stadium

• Wembley Stadium has been totally rebuilt and is now one of the most modern and breathtaking arenas in the world. The famous twin towers have made way for an arch over the stadium

• With 90,000 seats in Wembley stadium it will be the largest football stadium in the world with every seat under cover.

• The arch is 133 metres above the level of the ground level .

• The stadium roof is about 52 metres above the pitch.

• The new Wembley has a circumference of 1km.

• The rows of seating, if placed end to end, would stretch 54 kilometres

Tower bridge

• Tower Bridge was officially opened on 30th of June 1894

• The walkways connecting the two towers are situated 42m above the river Thames

London Dungeon• The London Dungeon is

situated under arches at London Bridge Station.

• There are lots of themed areas relating to different historical events that took place like :

• The Great Fire of London,• Jack the Ripper, • The Torture Chamber • The Tower of London’.

The Tower of London• The Keep or White Tower is

the original part of the castle built by William the Conqueror in 1078

• The Tower houses the Crown Jewels belonging to the British Monarchy

• The First Star of Africa, now mounted at the top of the Sovereign's Sceptre, is the largest cut diamond in the world

Buckingham Palace

• Buckingham Palace is The Queen's official London home.

• Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms. These include 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms.

• A flag always flies above Buckingham Palace when The Queen is at home.

• Changing the Guard takes place on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace at 11.30am daily.
