Travelling around the world

• Wee need:

At the airport

• An airport building where journeys begin and end is a terminal. You go to the check-in desk and say you have arrived (check in)

• You check in the baggage that will go into the hold but you carry your hand luggage with you on the plane. If your bags are heavier than the weight limit you have to pay excess baggage.

At the airport

• Departure: You wait in the departure lounge and when your flight is boarding ( = is ready for passengers to get on), you leave the terminal from a gate. You need your boarding pass to do it.

• Flight BA 1818 is now boarding at Gate 17!!!!!

• Arrival: When you arrive at your destination in a different country, you disembark and go through immigration. Collect your luggage from baggage reclaim and exit through customs.

The cabin

• Cabin: area for passengers to sit in a plane• Cabin crew / flight crew / flight attendants: the people whose job is to take

care of passengers on a plane.• Safety Information: Fasten your seat belt while seated• Smooth, comfortable flight• Bumpy flight : turbulence (We experienced severe turbulence during the flight)

Sea travel

• Sea travel is normally on a ferry / a ship, and the journey is called a crossing, but you can have a holiday on the sea if you go on a cruise.

• To board : to embark• To go ashore : to disembark• To be on board

• A long journey by sea: a voyage.

• You book a berth in a shared cabin or in a single or double cabin or in a deluxe cabin.

For some people a luxury cruise is the holiday of a lifetime!!

Accomodation

• You can book a room in a hotel, a hostel or a student residence.

•You can go to an agency (if they sell houses: estate agency (UK) / real estate agency (USA))

• You can also rent a room or a house from somebody. The money you pay (weekly or monthly) is the rent. The person who rents a room or a house is a tenant and the person who owns the property is a landlord (or landlady)
