The Power ofRoutes to activateeconomic growthand social cohesionin communities in theCape West Coast

Take the road less travelled

South African Shadow Minister of Tourism, James Vos

Founder West Coast Way, Carmen Lerm

Page 2: The Power of Tourism Routes

In 2014 the West Coast Way was founded to develop a collection of Routes for the Cape West

Coast. Through research and results in the growth of visitors, since the start of West Coast Way,

the benefits of Route Development to activate sustainability in regions have been defined and

proven. The benefits of the West Coast Way Routes are:

1) Actively promote economic opportunities and geographic spread within the Cape West

Coast rural regions while also entrenching a culture of tourism among all South Africans.

2) South Africa and in specific the Cape West Coast are a kaleidoscope of culture where at

every corner there is a new and intriguing tourism oering. This is even true for more remote

parts of the country, particularly small towns. Although rich in charm and character, what these

small towns lack in infrastructure is more of an opportunity than an impediment. Routes bring

small towns closer to larger towns and cities through an easy to navigate system.

3) Jobs are created through making small Cape West Coast towns viable attractions for the

crowds that seek equanimity away from big cities.

West Coast Way is a unique and exciting collection of themed Routes that encourages economic growth and potential through tourism marketing in the Cape West Coast, South Africa.

4) It is without a doubt that Tourism Routes can lead to the development of local enterprises,

increasing the demand for goods and services, and contribute to much needed employment.

The fundamental concept sustaining the establishment of tourism routes is based on the notion

of linking together a series of tourism attractions in order to promote the local economy by

encouraging visitors to travel from one location to another. It is this fundamental concept that

West Coast Way’s Routes deliver on.

5) The West Coast Way Route system is a unified theme and as a result stimulate

entrepreneurial opportunity through the development of additional products and services.

Tourism can be used as an eective tool to create jobs, provide opportunities for small businesses, promote livelihoods for communities and bring South Africans together to share experiences. More specifically, tourism can be used as an eective tool to break down barriers in South Africa and open up this country to be explored by a large portion of the population who are currently excluded from enjoying this experience.

It is this key benefit that the West Coast Way Routes deliver on.

Page 5: The Power of Tourism Routes

In conclusion:According to the South African Shadow Minister of Tourism, James Vos, “It is without a doubt

that these new routes can lead to the development of local enterprises, increasing the demand

for goods and services, and contribute to much needed employment. Tourism is an eective

tool to create jobs, provide opportunities for small businesses, promote livelihoods for

communities and bring South Africans together to share experiences.”

“Furthermore it must be mentioned that these routes are located within an area of vast natural

and cultural beauty – they will take visitors through some of the country's most awe-inspiring

landscapes, where they will find plenty of fantastic attractions and charming towns to visit

along the way,” says Minister Vos.

The founder of West Coast Way is Carmen Lerm: “West Coast Way stands for the road less

travelled and showcases new experiences - with something dierent and fresh on oer every

time. Amongst these are the Darling Wine and Beer Trip and wildlife themed trips. These trips

are easily packaged and managed for tour operators who do not have a West Coast oering in

their portfolio and now need a supplier – who can connect the visitor to the attractions in the

Cape West Coast.”
