Okay, so you’ve made it through the long,

snow/slushy/rainy winter. You’ve possibly even been

snowed in once or twice, depending on where you

live. You’ve definitely lasted through the short days

and the gloom of winter no matter where you live.

Now it’s time to shake off the cobwebs and get some

much-needed Vitamin D, but all of the places that

spring to mind are about to be crawling with beer

cans and bikinis, MTV and late night parties. Here is

a list of places that you can get away to, without

running into the spring-break crowd.

A much friendlier, quieter Florida spot in

March is Hollywood, where you’ll find the

protected North Beach, an eco-friendly

oasis that has a sea-turtle hatchery. There

is the Anne Kolb Nature Center at West

Lake Park, which has canoeing and

kayaking on offer to explore the marine life

and mangroves.

Cancun is wall-to-wall spring break this

time of year, but if you head just two hours’

drive North, you hit soft white sands of

Tulum, Mexico. There you will find quiet,

lush jungle scenery, Mayan ruins to

explore, and relaxing resorts not spilling

over with people.

Hit Hawaii in the early spring, too far away for

most spring break travel, and before summer

tourism really kicks in. You can still get your fill of

tropical drinks and flip-flops on pristine beaches

without stumbling over a hundred college kids on

your way to the water. Try a smaller island for a

more rugged hiking/camping experience, or stick

to the big island for pampering and touristy beach

spots.

Montreal is a beautiful city with a

burgeoning foodie scene and is pretty

sunny and temperate in March. There are

few better cities in the world to hang out in

a park all day to thaw out from the winter’s

chill. Picnics, walking, shopping, and street

art and music from all over the world

abound in this beautiful, approachable city.

Turks and Caicos might not be the first

idea that springs to mind, but in the

early spring there’s been airfare as low

as $340 out on New york in past years.

Some of the best islands for relaxing

getaways in the world, so it’s

absolutely a trip worth checking out.

Santa Fe, New Mexico is a beautiful town

full of good music and good food and

warmth. Keeping away from a waterfront will

minimize spring break hectic chaos and

prices, and with SXSW activities happening

in March, there are pretty good travel deals

to places in the Southwest that AREN’T

Austin, TX around this time.

Another option for spring travel to avoid

spring break overcrowding is a cruise. Take

a trip, relax in a floating hotel full of food and

entertainment, and never worry about

overbooked rooms or beaches too crowded

to walk on...a ship can only hold so many

people!
