I would like to proceed with more detailed statistics on transportation in Mashhad. The metropolitan area falling under the responsibility of the Metropolitan Municipality is 285 km2, with a population of 3.13 million. Annual population growth is approximately 1.2%. This population generates near 6.25 million trips everyday in the area in question (this figure was 3.5 million in 2004). Number of daily trip is estimated to increase to 7.5 million trips a day in 10 year.

Presentation Notes
There are 735,000 vehicles throughout the metropolitan area which circulate on the roads. We’ve got around 126 new cars joining the traffic everyday, and this figure tends to increase day by day because it’s becoming increasingly easyier to buy an automobile. The transportation network length currently amounts to 705.2 kilometers. Car ownership per 1.000 residents is 247 automobiles, which is growing as more and more people are better off in Iran. This figure is still quite low when compared to other countries such as USA (812/1.000), Italy (656/1.000), Japan (599/1.000) France (576/1.000), Spain (564/1.000) Germany (586/1.000), UK (515/1.000) (figures for the year 2002). But here we should note that the figure was only 96 in the year 2006. So, this is the time to solve this traffic problem, and past experience as well as the case of huge metropolises show that, no matter how large and long are the roads you build, you’l not be able to solve the traffic congestion problem, unless you create a backbone transport network which is based on railways. That’s why the Municipality’s strategy is to build high-capacity lines throughout the city.

Presentation Notes
Statistical figures about transportation in Mashhad in general are as follows: The road system currently accounts for about 98.35 percent of overall transport in Mashhad. This includes the elements of private cars, buses(including the BRT system), privately-owned public buses, minibuses, taxis, bicycles and pedestrians. The share of rail-based transportationion is currently about 1.65 percent. In line with Mashhad’s Transport Master Plan for 2021, the future vision of the Municipality consists in changing the balance in favor of the second one—increasing the share of rail-based modes up to more than 10 percent, in order to have a sustainable, liveable city. As for Mashhad’s future vision in railways: As I explained before, Mashhad urgently needs high-capacity railway systems to meet the increasing mobility needs within the city. Mashhad Municipality has dedicated an important section of its investment budget to transport projects. Thanks to that, only for the time being, we have about 35 kilometers of new railways under construction.

Presentation Notes
Mashhad Comprehensive Public Transport Plan Urban train systems spread all over the world. In the holy city of Mashhad in Iran, municipal authorities provided preliminary design studies in 1991 which led to the preparation of Mashhad Transportation Services in early 1994 by the Transportation Studies Center of Sharif University of Technology. Comprehensive studies of Mashhad transportation between 1994 and 1999 and Complementary research of railway transport between 2002 and 2004 was conducted by the Institute of Transportation, Sharif University of Technology. Based on researches approved by the Traffic Council of State and stated in Traffic Supreme of Iran cities, Mashhad needs 4 metro lines. According to existence of new cities such as Golbahar in the north and Binalud in south, after some researches, the development of subway lines in these cities was also expected and its ratification process has been done. After analyzing various options and studies, the best route got a priority which was from the end of the Fadayian Islam street (Nakhrisi) to the end of Vakil Abad Boulevard; because, based on estimates for the year 2016, Demand for travel by public transport on this route is so large that the number of passengers in each direction during peak hours is over 17,000 and to respond to this demand, a rail system of LRT train urban style with adequate capacity which meets the technical specifications, is required.
