AN INTRODUCTION TO MEWAR

The Sisodia Rajputs who ruled the erstwhile princely state of Mewar are regarded as the oldest serving dynasty in the world.

The current Maharana is the 76th of an illustrious lineage that can be traced back to 600 AD. This remarkable dynasty has

produced a number of heroes whose tales of valour are still current in India. The Mewar dynasty was founded by Bappa

Rawal in the 8th Century AD. He played a key role in the Battle of Rajasthan, a series of wars with the Arabs, who’d

conquered Sindh (making it the first region in undivided India to come under Muslim rule). The Arabs were roundly defeated

but the struggle to remain independent continued. In the early 16th century, the great Rana Sangha of Mewar defeated the

Sultan of Malwa (Mehmood Khilji) at Chittor followed by the Sultan of Delhi (Ibrahim Lodi) at Dholpur, losing an arm and a leg

in the process. These successes greatly expanded the kingdom and made the Maharana the most powerful ruler in North

India. It took the invading army of Babar, the founder of the Mughal Empire, to finally inflict defeat on this mighty warrior.

Mewar remained fiercely independent. The struggle against the Mughals continued under Sangha’s grandson, Maharana

Udai Singh and his son and successor, Maharana Pratap who engaged in battle against the Mughal armies of Akbar the

great. The great Pratap perfected the art of guerrilla warfare to take on the many times stronger Mughal Army, utilising the

hilly terrain of his kingdom to advantage. It was Pratap’s son and successor, Amar Singh, who after 17 battles with the

Mughals that completely drained Mewar of financial resources and man power, finally accepted the Mughals conditionally as

rulers. Mewar remained the only princely state in India to command a 19 gun salute, till independence.

Mewar, a unique and colourful part of South Rajasthan straddling the ancient Aravali Mountains, is a hilly, relatively green

and well watered part of the state. Some of the greatest hill forts in South Asia dominate the skyline. Forested hills and

valleys are home to interesting wildlife and the frozen in time countryside still relies on Persian wheels and animal power for

irrigation and cultivation. The Mewar Expedition provides a well-paced immersive holiday experience to allow travellers to

experience this wonderful part of the world in a very unique way. BACK

Itinerary

DAY 1- Arrive in Ahmedabad by 10 AM. Proceed to Bera, a barely known and seldom visited village on the rain shadow side of

the Aravalis which is the best place in India to see leopards in the wild. An open jeep ride into the leopard’s lair at dusk.

DAY 2- A drive into the wild at the crack of Dawn. Hit the road again to Ranakpur with its 1444 pillared Jain Temple (no two

alike) in the middle of a forest, by a lonely river. Continue to Kumbhalgarh the impregnable fort whose never ending wall is

second only to the Great Wall of China in length.

DAY3-Drive up to Chittorgarh. One of India’s finest forts and the pride of Mewar. It was sacked thrice, each time its brave and

heavily outnumbered men rode out to fight the strong enemy (and certain death), while the women committed Jauhar

(honorary self-immolation), preferring death to dishonour. Drive to Udaipur in the evening.

DAY 4 -Take in the sights and sounds of the Venice of the East. A guided heritage walking tour of its colourful market,

followed by a drive up to the Monsoon Palace overlooking the city, to catch the sunset.

DAY 5 - Head back to Ahmedabad, arriving around lunch. Take in a great old Baoli(stepwell) and a grand Rauza (palace).

A spot of shopping in the evening.

DAY 6 - Spend the day soaking in Ahmedabad. Tour ends in the evening. BACK
