LONDON / Londýn

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Londýn je hlavné mesto Spojeného kráľovstva Veľkej Británie a Severného Írska.

There is the river Thames in London. V Londýne sa nachádza rieka Temža.

London is 3 cities. They were separated in the past: City of London, City of Westminster, City of Southwark. Londýn, to sú 3 mestá. Tie boli oddelené v minulosti: štvrť City, štvrť Westminster a štvrť Soutwark.

CITY OF LONDON

The City of London is in the centre of the town, it´s a financial centre. Štvrť City je v centre mesta a je finančným centrom. The original building is St. Paul´s Cathedral. Pôvodnou budovou je Katedrála Sv. Pavla. It was the highest building in the past, nowadays there are lots of skyscrapers. Bola najvyššou budovou v minulosti, teraz tam je veľa mrakodrapov. The most famous is called 30 St. Mary Axe. Najslávnejším je mrakodrap s názvom 30 St. Mary Axe, ľudovo nazývaný „Uhorka“.

CITY OF WESTMINSTER

It is a part of the centre of London. Je súčasťou centra Londýna, tzv. vnútorný Londýn. There are lots of government buildings. Je tam veľa vládnych budov. If you go to Westminster, you can visit: Westminster Abbey, The Houses of Parliament with Big Ben, 10 Downing Street, The White Hall. Ak pôjdete do štvrte Westminster, môžete navštíviť pamiatky a budovy ako Westminsterské opáctvo, Domy parlamentu s Big Benom, ulicu 10 Downing street, kde sídli britský premiér, súbor budov s názvom White Hall.

CITY OF SOUTHWARK

It was the poorest part of London. Bola to najchudobnejšia časť Londýna. Now, there is the best known station called Waterloo. Teraz sa tam nachádza najznámejšia stanica, ktorá sa volá Waterloo.

THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT and BIG BEN

The British parliament meets here. It´s divided into House of Lords and House of Commons. Stretáva sa tu britský parlament. Je rozdelený na Snemovňu lordov a Dolnú snemovňu. You can find it near the bridge called Westminster Bridge over the river Thames. Môžete to nájsť pri moste s názvom Westminsterský most ponad riekou Temža.

Big Ben is the name of the bell. It´s in one of the towers. BBC uses its sounds to announce the time in the radio. Big Ben je názov zvona. Je v jednej z veží. BBC používa jeho zvuk na oznámenie času v rádiu.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE

This square is in the heart of London, it is a tourist attraction, and one of the most famous squares in the UK. Námestie je v srdci Londýna, je to turistická atrakcia a jedno z najslávnejších námestí v GB. People come here to celebrate the New Year´s Eve. Ľudia tu prichádzajú sláviť Silvester. Norway always gives a Christmas gift to London – it´s a Christmas tree situated on this square. Nórsko vždy dá vianočný darček mestu Londýn – je to vianočný stromček umiestnený na tomto námestí. On St. Patrick´s Day, the water in all the fountains is green. Na deň Sv. Patrika je voda vo všetkých fontánach zelená. There are always many pigeons. Je tam vždy veľa holubov. There is a busy traffic. Je tu hustá dopravná premávka. On the corner, there is a National Gallery. Na rohu námestia je Národná galéria.

NELSON´S COLUMN

It´s in the middle of Trafalgar Square.

There is a statue of admiral Nelson on the top of the column. He won the battle against

Napoleon in 1805. Je v strede Trafalgarského

námestia. Na vrchole stĺpu je socha admirála Nelsona, ktorý vyhral

bitku proti Napoleonovi v r. 1805.

Saint PAUL´S CATHEDRAL

An Architect Wren built this cathedral in the 17th century. Architekt Wren postavil túto katedrálu v 17. storočí. Its dome is the second highest in the world (111m). Jeho kupola je druhá najväčšia na svete, má 111m. Only St. Peter´s Cathedral in Rome has the highest one. Len Katedrála Sv. Petra má väčšiu kupolu. There is a Whispering Gallery inside of the cathedral. V katedrále je tzv. Šepkajúca galéria. If you whisper there, other people can hear and understand it. Ak tam šepkáte, iní ľudia to môžu počuť a rozumieť. Lady Diana and Charles got married there. Princezná Diana a Charles sa tu zosobášili.

LONDON EYE

London Eye is very popular among tourists. It´s a big wheel from which you can see all the town. It takes 30 minutes to go round. It was built to celebrate a new millenium. Near London Eye, there is a Millenium Bridge.

Londýnske oko je veľmi populárne medzi turistami. Je to veľké koleso, z ktorého môžete vidieť celé mesto. Jazda trvá 30 minút. Londýnske oko bolo postavené pre oslavu nového tisícročia. V jeho blízkosti sa nachádza Miléniový most.

Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street

Piccadilly is an important traffic point. Piccadilly je dôležitý dopravný uzol. There is an underground station Nachádza sa tu stanica metra. It is known for its neon signs on the corner of the street. Je známa vďaka neónovým reklamám na rohu ulice. Piccadilly is a busy meeting point, it is a centre of entertainment and shopping. Piccadilly je obľúbené miesto stretnutí, je centrom zábavy a nakupovania.

Oxford Street is a shopping street. Oxfordská ulica je nákupnou ulicou. You can buy everything there. Môžete tam kúpiť všetko. The shops are not always the most expensive, but the shopping on Oxford Street is very popular. Obchody nie sú vždy tie najdrahšie, ale nákupy na Oxfordskej ulici sú veľmi populárne.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

It is the biggest office in the world. The queen works there. Je to najväčšia kancelária na svete. Pracuje tu kráľovná. It became a royal palace in 1837 during the reign of Queen Victoria. V r. 1837 sa stal kráľovským palácom, počas vlády kráľovnej Viktórie. The state rooms are open to the public. Štátne izby sú otvorené pre publikum. There are also private rooms of Queen Elisabeth II. Sú tam tiež súkromné izby kráľovnej Alžbety II. In front of the Buckingham Palace, there is a Victoria Memorial with some fountains. Pred palácom je Pamätník kráľovnej Viktórie s fontánami. Changing of the Guards is a tourist attraction (every day in summer). Výmena stráži je turistickou atrakciou (každý deň v lete).

WINDSOR

Windsor is the largest country house of Elisabeth II.

Windsor je najväčšie vidiecke sídlo kráľovnej Alžbety II.

TOWER of LONDON

The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 11th century. Londýnska pevnosť bola postavená Viliamom Dobyvateľom v 11. storočí. He built especially the White Tower which is the historical centre of the building. On postavil najmä Bielu vežu, ktorá je historickým centrom budovy. In the past, there was a prison. V minulosti tu bolo väzenie. 2 wives of Henry VIII. lost their heads here. 2 ženy Henricha VIII. tu prišli o hlavy (boli im odťaté). Nowadays, you can find there the Crown Jewels. Dnes tu nájdete Kráľovské korunovačné klenoty. It has a world heritage site status by UNESCO. Má status svetového dedičstva vyhlásené organizáciou Unesco.

TOWER BRIDGE

Tower Bridge is a symbol of London. Most Tower je symbolom Londýna. It has got two towers and two horizontal walkways. Má 2 veže a 2 horizontálne priechody. People started to build this bridge in the 19th century, because the east of London became crowded. Ľudia začali stavať most, pretože východný Londýn začal byť preplnený. 40 000 people cross the bridge every day. 40 000 ľudí prejde týmto mostom každý deň. Now, the bridge opens nearly 1000 times a year. Dnes sa most otvára asi 1000krát za rok. It used to open 50 times a day. Zvykol sa otvárať 50krát za deň. You can visit Tower Bridge and see how it was built thanks to photos and films. Môžete navštíviť tento most a pozrieť sa, ako bol stavaný vďaka fotografiám a filmom.

GREENWICH

It was a small village in the past. Bola to malá dedinka v minulosti. Now, it´s a part of London. It is in the south of the town. Teraz to je časť Londýna. Je na juhu mesta. There is a Royal Observatory and a Prime Meridian. Je tam kráľovské observatórium a nultý poludník. There is one of the oldest park in London. Je tu jeden z najstarších parkov Londýna. You can play there, take a boat on the lake and you can see also the old oak tree of the queen Elisabeth I. Môžete sa tam zahrať, počlnkovať na jazere a tiež vidieť starý dub kráľovnej Alžbety I. Olympic games in 2012 will be held here. Budú sa tu konať Olympijské hry v r.2012.
