The continuous line drawing concept introduces a human dimension to the conference. The illustrations are still abstract enough, however, to permit a wide range of creative interpretations. Their “hand-drawn” quality underscores a human, people-oriented approach to leadership. In fact, the continuous, flowing lines are reminiscent of individual signatures: the shaping, helping hand is never far away.

The two illustrations presented here correspond to the two conferences. The “garden” illustration suggests that the participants are planting the seeds of their leadership. They are acquiring the skills they will need for their personal and professional development. The second illustration, of a mountain climber looking through binoculars, corresponds to the “action” phase of the participant’s leadership, when vision and action will be required to scale new heights.

The graphic approach is simple and flexible, with flat colors and flowing lines. The “doodle” quality of the illustration is friendly and approachable, yet it retains an abstract quality that lends itself to broad interpretation.

An imaginative springboardGraphically, this approach uses archival stills from famous movies, cartoons or televisionshows, juxtaposed with one or a few simple words that open the possibilities for discussionand analysis. They form the foundation situation from which a lesson can be drawn aboutleadership — its attainment and exercise. These visuals act as an imaginative springboard fordiscussion, and serve as a lighthearted take on leadership. Indeed, they are hard to resistfor their humor and wit.

Recent studies of highly successful firms reveal that the

organizations that are most effective, best lead and managed,

have leadership founded in their cultural values and system. They

also develop a strong feeder pool of candidates to fill succession

needs. Jim Collins, in his book “Good to Great,” notes that all but

one of the companies that made the transition from good to great

did so under the leadership of individuals that emerged from

within their own companies. From a cultural and historical point

of view, Golder’s success also has depended upon its leaders

“growing up” in the business, emerging from within.

BACKGROUND

GOLDER LEADERSHIP AGENDA 2006 1There are two components successful companies use to address leadership.

First, is to develop a broad base of leadership attitudes, knowledge, skills and

behaviors across the organization, establishing leadership as part of the culture

of the organization. Second is to provide specialized advanced leadership

training for select group of employees to ensure leadership continuity, part of

succession planning. The Leadership Agenda focuses on the first component.

There’s more than one solution to every problem

This approach is simple, elemental and intellectual. It illustrates how leadership requires a creative intelligence to marshal people and resources into a unified and effective whole. The individual geometric pieces are “meaningless” on their own, but when joined in the correct combination, they coalesce into a meaningful whole.
