Kadrina is situated in Lääne- Viru county. One of 15 counties in Estonia.

Kadrina is one of the largest municipalities in the county.

Facts

By the year 1241 Kadrina as the habitat already existed. This was the year it was first mentioned in the Danish book of land taxation.

There is the coat of arms on the picture. There are 2 symbols on the coat of arms-

broken wheel, 3 Greek crosses The broken wheel

represents –a legend, that when Saint Kathrine was tortured on the wheel, it broke. It represents goods victory over evil.

And the 3 crosses represent faith: faith in god, in Republic of Estonian and in yourself.

Sõna seob – Word Binds

The monument “ Sõna seob” is dedicated to Estonian language and it is situated very properately right next to school. Also “sõna seob” or “word binds” is old saying of Kadrina.

Neeruti

F.R. Kreutzwald epic “Kalevipoeg” Folktales Popular place

for skiing

Neeruti is just few kilometres outside of Kadrina. It was a home for Kreutzwald, the man who wrote Estonian national epic “Kalevipoeg”, in translation “Kalev`s son”. Many folktales are related to this place involving Kalevipoeg. On the picture there is the statue of Kalevipoeg and on his chest there is the symbol of Kadrina- the broken wheel.

We call the place Neertuti`s mountains even though they are more like hills, if even that.

Rakvere

Rakvere is the centre of Lääne- Viru county, which makes it the most popular place.

Fortress of Rakvere

The Fortress of Rakvere. The ruins of it are from Middle Ages but it has been rebuilt to Medieval theme park. Many tours and small history lessons about the life back then take place inside. The best place there is probably the torture chamber.

Lahemaa national park

One of the most important forest protected areas in Europe.

Lahemaa is also the most important nature preserve park in Northern Estonia as the most important forest protected areas in Europe.

Lahemaa translates roughly as “Land of Bays”.

Palermo

In 19th century a tradesman opened an inn called Palermo in rakvere.

He named it after Sicilian city.

As today, there is no inn, but the woods that once surrounded the inn is now called Palermo.

The forest`s health paths are very popular.
