THE WARS OF THE POLES – WHY?
• Treaty of Versailles.• “the great” Adolf Hitler and his wish to annex Poland.• Japan confronting Russia and china while expanding to collect raw
materials.• Japan’s attempt to expand into south pacific.
WAR STORY• 1st September,1939 – 14th august, 1945• Some 70 nations took part in the conflict.• Axis powers- Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and
Bulgaria.• Allied powers- Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, the United States,
and China.• 19 million Soviet civilians, 10 million Chinese, and 6 million European
Jews lost their lives during the war.• World War II cost the United States a million causalities and nearly
400,000 deaths.

To bomb or not to bomb, that is the question
THE OFFICIAL ORDER• The written order for the use of the atomic
bomb against Japanese cities was drafted by General Groves. President Truman and Secretary of War Stimson approved the order at Potsdam.
• Hiroshima, Kokura, Niigata and Nagasaki were chosen.
WHY HIROSHIMA?• The size and shape of the city was suited to the destructive power of the
A-Bombs.• Not attacked previously, hence can ascertain the effects of the A-bomb.• Had a high a high concentration of troops, military facilities and factories.
WHY THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE BOMBED• The A-bomb was made for defence only.• The bomb was illegal as declared by the league of nations.• Use of bomb was racially motivated.• There were alternatives
• Should have waited for Russia• Should have demonstrated• The emperor
• It was inhumane.
WHY THEY HAD BOMBED• Bomb saved American lives.• Ironically, saved Japanese lives.• Shortened war.• Convinced emperor to intervene.• Japanese were given fair warning
• Ultimatum called Potsdam declaration.• Retaliation to Japanese barbarism.
THE AIRCRAFTEnola gay• Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber• Named after the mother of the pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets.
THE JOURNEY• Took off from North Field, in the Mariana Islands, about six hours' flight
time from Japan, accompanied by two other B-29s.• The aircraft made their way separately to Iwo Jima.• From there they left for Hiroshima.
THAT’S ONE SMALL DROP FOR A BOMB, ONE GIANT FALL FOR MANKIND
• The release was at 08:15• The Little Boy took 43 seconds to fall from the aircraft flying at 31,060
feet (9,470 m) to the predetermined detonation height about 1,968 feet (600 m) above the city.

THE MAN WHO LIVED TO TELL THE STORY, TWICE
• Tsutomu Yamaguchi was a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during World War II.
• Although at least 160 people are known to have been affected by both bombings, he is the only person to have been officially recognized by the government of Japan as surviving both explosions.
