Das Leben in Deutschland

• German host families live in both urban and rural areas

• ISE students visiting Germany will likely have the opportunity to attend school with a host sibling

• German families typically eat fresh bread or crusty rolls with cheese, cold cuts and jam for breakfast, sometimes accompanied by a soft-boiled egg

• In German Gymnasien, the students usually stay in one classroom, and the teachers come to them

• Popcorn in German movie theaters is sugared, not salted

•Germans often have a pair of Hausschuhe that are worn only in the home

• Germans close the bathroom door when it is not in use

•Germans typically don’t drink tap water, but buy bottled water, usually with Kohlensäure (carbonation)

• ISE Family Stay Coordinators are current or retired English teachers or individuals connected to community organizations including local churches and youth groups

• Host families chosen by ISE Family Stay Coordinators• Must pass phone or in-person interview

• Home visits may occur prior to acceptance
