Born in the vibrant town of Santiago de Cuba, on Friday 19th June 1953, just a week and a month before the legendary attack on the Moncada barracks which changed Cuban history forever- Maria Teresa Gonzalez Trull, my mother, would serve as an influential antecedent to many marvelous impacts in the world for the life to come…

The second daughter to the fiery couple of globe-trotters Yolanda Trull and Miguel Gonzalez, she would also know the nature of cross-fires in family as well as culture from a very young age…

She was destined to follow in her parents’ footsteps…Globe-steps…Before her eighteen years,she would explore…

Not only did Maria view much of the fascinating world through travels, she also lived during one of the most exciting periods of the 2Oth Century…From the 1950s to the 1960s, her childhood was coloured with all the beautiful social paradoxes of life…

Out of this exciting era, came out a beautiful woman with vicious intellect and a desire to be part of the differences surging around her.

After a “polysected” education in French, American, religious systems, Tere finally finished her high school education at the age of nineteen and set off to study medicine at the University of Perugia in 1972.

There began the first exploitations of her liberty in the name of the Tony, the John and the Holy Hippy.

After graduation, and many years of eventful goat stealing, discussions with friends like Otto, working in factories or cleaning up the vomit of other students as a student job and attending her big sister Yoli’s wedding, Maria did such things as:

1. Marry a rebellious, promiscuous Basque.

2. Get another job.

3. Have her first baby boy, Ian Gaizka Horacio Vicente Bustamante Otaduy on Monday 16th June 1980.

4. Travel to Nicaragua for humanitarian reasons.

Then suddenly, one day, chance stopped a little bit more abruptly than usual,

and it never got its footing back fully as the beautiful

Maria succumbed to a certain imprisonment…

And so began the gruesome, horrific raising of four demons sent by Hell of Men to test the

Saint Mother Maria Teresa in all the hardships of single-

parenting…

But the real question, on this day of celebration, is not whether the choices she has made nor whether the experiences she has faced were right or good, wrong or bad… The real question today is who is this woman that stands before us? This woman I call my mother? Who is Maria Teresa Gonzalez Trull on this day of her 55th birthday?
