protect the Chinese Empire or its prototypical statesagainst intrusions by various nomadic groups or military

incursions by various warlike peoples or forces. Several walls were being built as early asthe 7th century BC; these, later joined together and made bigger and stronger, are nowcollectively referred to as the Great Wall.Especially famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains. Sincethen, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced; the majority ofthe existing wall was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty.Other purposes of the Great Wall have included border controls, allowing the imposition ofduties on goods transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of tradeand the control of immigration and emigration. Furthermore, the defensive characteristicsof the Great Wall were enhanced by the construction of watch towers, troop barracks, garrison stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire, and the factthat the path of the Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor. The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along anarc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. A comprehensivearchaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has concluded that the Ming wallsmeasure 8,850 km (5,500 mi). This is made up of 6,259 km (3,889 mi) sections of actualwall, 359 km (223 mi) of trenches and 2,232 km (1,387 mi) of natural defensive barrierssuch as hills and rivers. Another archaeological survey found that the entire wall with all ofits branches measure out to be 21,196 km (13,171 mi).

Colosseum - Rome

The Colosseum or Coliseum, also known as the FlavianAmphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium; Italian:Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo) is an ellipticalamphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Builtof concrete and stone, it was the largest amphitheatre ofthe Roman Empire, and is considered one of the

greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is the largest amphitheatre in theworld. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under theemperor Vespasian in 70 AD, and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heirTitus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (81–96). These threeemperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheatre was named in Latin forits association with their family name (Flavius). The Colosseum could hold, it is estimated, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, andwas used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animalhunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classicalmythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. Itwas later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order,a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused bydevastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol ofImperial Rome. It is one of Rome’s most popular tourist attractions and has closeconnections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads atorchlit “Way of the Cross” procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum. The Colosseum, like all the Historic Centre of Rome, Properties of the Holy See in Italy andthe Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, was listed as a World Heritage Site byUNESCO in 1980. In 2007 the complex was also included among the New7Wonders ofthe World, following a competition organized by New Open World Corporation (NOWC).The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.

Rialto Bridge - VeniceRialto Bridge

The first dry crossing of the Grand Canal was a pontoonbridge built in 1181 by Nicolò Barattieri. It was called thePonte della Moneta, presumably because of the mint thatstood near its eastern entrance.

The development and importance of the Rialto market on the eastern bank increasedtraffic on the floating bridge, so it was replaced in 1255 by a wooden bridge. This structurehad two inclined ramps meeting at a movable central section, that could be raised to allowthe passage of tall ships. The connection with the market eventually led to a change ofname for the bridge. During the first half of the 15th century, two rows of shops were builtalong the sides of the bridge. The rents brought an income to the State Treasury, whichhelped maintain the bridge.

Maintenance was vital for the timber bridge. It was partly burnt in the revolt ledby Bajamonte Tiepolo in 1310. In 1444, it collapsed under the weight of a crowd watchinga boat parade and it collapsed again in 1524.

The idea of rebuilding the bridge in stone was first proposed in 1503. Several projectswere considered over the following decades. In 1551, the authorities requested proposalsfor the renewal of the Rialto Bridge, among other things. Plans were offered by famousarchitects, such as Jacopo Sansovino,Palladio and Vignola, but all involved a Classicalapproach with several arches, which was judged inappropriate to thesituation. Michelangelo also was considered as designer of the bridge.

The present stone bridge, a single span designed by Antonio da Ponte, was finallycompleted in 1591. It is similar to the wooden bridge it succeeded. Two inclined rampslead up to a central portico. On either side of the portico, the covered ramps carry rows ofshops. The engineering of the bridge was considered so audacious thatarchitect Vincenzo Scamozzi predicted future ruin. The bridge has defied its critics tobecome one of the architectural icons of Venice.
