Pilgrimages used to be Strenuous and Tough
Hindus have been going on pilgrimages since time immemorial. In the early days these pilgrimages were very harsh and rugged. There were hardly any facilities for accommodation, decent meals or proper toilets. These conditions of hardship also applied to the Chardham or four places of pilgrimage for the devout Hindus.
These are known as Chardham hotels. These facilities have been created to cater to the pilgrims headed for the Char Dhams.
The Char Dham consists of Gangotri, the place of origin for the Ganges, Yamunotri, the origin of the River Yamuna, Kedarnath, the earthly abode of Lord Shiva and Badrinath, the home of Lord Vishnu. It is only recently that a hospitality group has set up camps at different places in India’s mountainous state o f Uttarakhand.
Excellent Infrastructure
The Char Dham hotels are big on infrastructure. A total of eleven functioning hotels or camps have been set up in the State o f Uttarakhand including the four meant for pilgrims headed for the four important places of pilgrimage. These four hotels or resorts or camps are known as Chardham hotels and they are located at Joshimath for Badrinath, Guptkashi for Kedarnath, Barkot for Yamunotri and Harsil for Gangotri. With these hotels the pilgrims headed for the four places are at last able to enjoy the basic comforts both to and from the pilgrimage.
Accommodation & Dining
The Chardham hotels are in the form of camps that ensure optimum comfort for the tired pilgrims headed for or returning from the four places o f pilgrimage. The facilities provided at these environmentally friendly hotels are far better than one will find anywhere else in the area. The accommodation is provided in all weather luxury cottage camps with thatched roofs.
There are attached baths and toilets with running hot and cold water. The Char Dham hotels serve piping hot multi-cuisine dining for the pilgrims. The food is vegetarian and consists of dishes that are from South Indian, Gujarati and Marwari regions of the country.
Services Provided to the Pilgrims
For the travel-weary pilgrims hot water bottles are provided at sun down at the Char Dham hotels. For those headed for Kedarnath the pilgrims are provided umbrellas during the arduous trek. Full assistance is made available for shrine visit as well as the arrangements for pony and palanquin where required.
For the tired pilgrims the services of local masseurs are also made available at Barkot and Guptkashi. Today the Chardham camps have redefined pilgrimage in the Uttarakhand area of India. The accommodation facilities at these camps are world-class and this attracts greater number of tourists each year.
