Destination of AU CO CRUISE passing thought

THE GULF OF TONKIN

The legendary Gulf of Tonkin, bounded by both Vietnam and China, covers three bays: the UNESCO World

Heritage Site of Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. Peppered with over 3,000 islands, the Gulf of

Tonkin creates truly majestic and breathtaking views. Resulting from millions of years of erosion, the islands

feature numerous grottoes and caves, lagoons and coral reefs which display an amazing range of biodiversity.

The Gulf of Tonkin’s amazing seascape and scenic beauty, has made it a dramatic backdrop and filming location

for countless movies and documentaries, perhaps most famous of which is the French classic “Indochine”, set

during Vietnam’s colonial era.

On board the luxurious The Au Co, you will voyage through this spectacular scenery; exploring the fascinating

history and experiencing the authentic culture to be found in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Indeed, our unique 3 day 2 night cruise is the first of its kind to discover three different bays and its largest island.

HALONG BAY

One of Vietnam’s most prized treasures and one of the country’s most popular places to visit, Halong Bay

(meaning ‘descending dragon’) is dominated by more than 1,600 uninhabited limestone karsts and islets which

rise majestically out of the emerald blue waters to heights of up to 100 metres (330 feet). The sheer size and

numbers of these outcrops provide a stunning contrast and backdrop to the Bay’s water as viewed from sea level

on The Au Co.

Such is the geological significance of Halong Bay that in 1994, UNESCO recognised it as a natural World

Heritage site. Furthermore, in 2011 it was voted one of the world’s new 7 Wonders of Nature.

Almost 1,000 of Halong Bay’s outstanding islets and rocky outcrops have been given imaginative names by

locals over the years. Derived from their perceived shapes they include names such as Man’s Head, Wading Ox,

Wallowing Buffalo and perhaps the most famous of all, Fighting Cocks, which we will pass on the first day of

your cruise.

Halong Bay is deeply entrenched in the Vietnamese national psyche, particularly as a great number of myths,

legends and folklore surround the Bay. Floating fishing villages are the most popular human attraction. Entire

village populations live, work and die on these ’floating islands’, and on the second day of your cruise you will

have an opportunity to see and visit some of the locals, as they ply the waters around their villages selling their

fresh produce to the passing tourists.

The sea in Halong Bay is generally less than 10 metres (33 feet) deep and boasts a rich biodiversity of about

1,000 species of marine animals, as well as over 160 species of coral. You will have an opportunity on the first

day of your cruise to swim and snorkel in the Bay’s waters and also to kayak into some of the hidden lagoons.

Another exceptional geological feature is the number of limestone islands which have caves and grottoes within

them. The total number of caves has never been determined and there are almost certainly more which are yet to

be discovered. On the final day of The Au Co cruise you will have a chance to visit one of the most commonly

visited grottoes, Sung Sot (Surprise) cave.

CAT BA ISLAND

“Rugged, craggy and jungle-clad, Cat Ba is straight out of Jurassic Park.” That’s how Lonely Planet introduces

this incredible island which neighbours the Halong Bay World Heritage site. Sparsely populated Cat Ba Island is

the largest of the 366 islands in the Cat Ba Archipelago. Almost half of the Island’s 140 square kilometres, along ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Add: No 9, Hang Thung str, Hoan Kiem dist, HanoiMobile : Mr Hướng ( Tony Hawk ) 0914.258.053 or 0985.945.101Yahoo: hanoitouronline ; Skype : hawkhuongE-mail : [email protected] – website: hanoitouristonline.com

with 90 square kilometres of the adjacent waters, were declared a National Park in 1986 to protect its diverse eco-

systems.

Both Cat Ba Island and its National Park have a variety of land cover including bushes and woodland, limestone

karst, limestone forest, agricultural areas, bamboo forest, mangrove and sea grass beds.

It is also home to the highly endangered Cat Ba golden-headed langur, one of the ten rarest species in the world,

as well as other rare mammals.

On the second day of your cruise, you will have a chance to explore the National Park, this time from Viet Hai

village, where you can visit The Au Co Green Farm and meet local fishermen and learn about their daily life.

From Viet Hai, you can choose whether you wish to explore the National Park on a guided walking expedition or

(for the more energetic) by bicycle.

BAI TU LONG BAY

Located immediately east of Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay stretches all the way to the Chinese border,

encompassing a massive area, which includes a long string of islands and a national park.

According to the legend, after descending to Halong Bay millions of years ago, and dropping numerous eggs

which hatched forming thousands of rocks and islands, the dragon returned to heaven. As she did, she said

goodbye to her offspring at Bai Tu Long Bay (which means “The dragon parts the offspring’’).

Bai Tu Long Bay is every bit as beautiful as its more famous neighbour, Halong Bay. Indeed in some ways it is

even more beautiful as it has scarcely seen any tourist development.

On the second day of your cruise, we will pass through the western extremity of Bai Tu Long Bay, cruising past

the floating villages of Cua Van and Vung Vieng before paying a visit to Cong Dam fishing village. Here, you ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Add: No 9, Hang Thung str, Hoan Kiem dist, HanoiMobile : Mr Hướng ( Tony Hawk ) 0914.258.053 or 0985.945.101Yahoo: hanoitouronline ; Skype : hawkhuongE-mail : [email protected] – website: hanoitouristonline.com

can explore the floating village on a relaxing rowing boat, seeing how the residents live and derive their income

from fishing and marine cultivation. The more adventurous can even kayak in and around the village.

LAN HA BAY

Located to the south of Halong Bay and east of Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay has long been famed for its unspoiled

and magnificent natural beauty and its intense concentration of pristine limestone mountains, which partition the

open sea into smaller bays and gulfs.

The Bay covers an area of more than 7,000 ha of which 5,400 ha is under the management of Cat Ba National

Park. The waters here are home to hundreds of species of fish and marine life. Larger marine animals in the area

include seals and even three species of dolphin.

It features 139 beautiful, small and pristine sandy beaches, many of which lie between stone mountains. Indeed,

on the first day of your cruise, you will have a chance to relax on one of them; the white sandy beach of Ho Ba

Ham islets, where you can also swim and kayak in the azure-blue water off the Beach, supervised by our ship’s

crew.

On leaving the Beach, we will pass one of Lan Ha Bay’s few fishing villages, Cua Van, observing how the locals

live in this remote Bay.
