REFLECTION(P4/P5)The project consists out of a research part: ‘Critical Alternative Approach to/within Post‐disaster Re‐Development’ and a design part: ‘Spatial Strategy to Enable Cultural Resilience inVillaRosa,Port‐Au‐Prince(Haiti)’.

Theresearchoutcomepresentsacriticalalternativeapproach instrategywithin(post‐disaster re‐)development. It describes the relevance of urbanism and urban planning in thepractice of development. The approach links educational development projects to overallimprovement of infrastructure by structuring resilient and sustainable interventions asprincipalobjectives. Thedesign isa spatial strategy.Thedesignoutcomepresent thematerializationof theresearchfindingsaswellasacriticalapproachtoresilientandsustainableurbanplanningwhichreflects the need for urban strategies concerning the contemporary, global issue of rapidurbanization:slumming.GraduationPhaseInitiallythefocusofthisprojectwasputonthedesignpart.Withthelimitedamountof(base‐)materialtoworkfromthedesignbecamemoredependentonmodel‐making.Adjacentthetimededicatedtoconductresearchbecameproblematic.Forthemostpartthisisduetothefactthatthe literature of critique on development was extensive and requiredmore time in order toreflectonthespecificcasestudy.Muchoftheobstaclesintheprocessofresearchhadtodowiththe specificity of semantics and terminology. The methodological approach towards a pattern for planning (= main goal of theresearch) follows two directions. One, a critical analysis of the territory and approachwithinmitigating risk to hazards and other crises via (international aid‐) development. Second, theformulatedphilosophyofeducation‐orientateddevelopmentplanning.

Thedesign part is using the pattern tomaterialize the philosophy and the critique ondevelopment. It constructs a vision based on respectively the approach (social landscape, operational landscape,publicdomain)andcritiqueondevelopment(revolution&ownership).Thisvisionisusedintheprocessofdesigningtozoominonfourcriticalprojectsandreflectedbackuponthecoherentplaninordertofinalizethespatialstrategy(seeimage).ResearchanddesignInthisgraduationproject thedesignpart isadirect followupof theresearch.Thedesignofaspatialstrategyisfollowingtheconcludedpatternforurbanplanningdescribedintheresearch.Thethemesandtypologiesofinterventionsaredeparturepointsforthedesignandarespecifiedvia design. The approach in design follows a theoretical approach from social context to anoperational (political, organizational) context, andmust reflect pragmatic steps in the urban, physical, landscape. Therefore thedesignpreliminaryoutputmustbe tested/evaluatedon theresearchquestions, goals, andconclusions.Thisevaluationwill indicatetheapplicabilityofthetheoretical approach and illustrate specific methods within design to adapt the formulatedpattern.ProjectrelevancyTheprojectadvocatestherelevancyofurbanisminthepracticeofdevelopmentandthepracticeof post‐disaster re‐development (long‐term relief/aid work). As the literature review is builtuponstudiesfromotherdisciplines,suchassociology,anthropology,andeducation/pedagogy,its interpretation through urbanism relates contemporary discussions of aid to spatialstrategies.Meaning, theprojectinitselfargumentscritiqueformulatedfromexternaldisciplinesto an alternative spatial configuration. It uses political, land (rights), and socio‐economiccontexts to formulate theapproach. Therefore theproject is relevant inacademicandgeneraldiscussions.Adjacent, thesocial‐orientationof theproject isrelevant toawidersocialcontextbecause it argues and illustrates how in contemporary, post‐Modern, times society is dealingwithrapidurbanization(slumming)andaseverelackofinitiativestoimproveandappropriatethemuchneededinfrastructure.
