Purpose of this Deck

– Provide a high-level view of an approach I use to get a consensus of the market at large

– Provide my opinion of the current consensus based on my “read” of available data points

– Share some of those data points– This deck is by no means conclusive but could be

but one data point in itself

VDI - IMO

– VDI adoption is in an uptrend that will last 3-5 years– VDI has a number of benefits yet is not a fit for all use

cases– VDI is but 1 piece of the desktop (or user device)

virtualization story– VDI is a strategy for application compatibility and

accessibility while applications make the slower than desired transition to web and/or cloud based availability

– VDI has a finite life span – my best guess at this time is that in about 5 years we’ll see the peak

Approach

• Gather many data points• The more data points the better• A wide variety of data points is better• Assess data points as favorable, neutral or

Industry Analysts cont’d

• IDC research shows that the virtual client computing market will grow from $2.3 billion in 2011 to over $3 billion by 2015, with nearly a third of that coming from the centralized virtual desktop market (also called VDI).

• Total customer count is expected to continue to rise well into the second half of the decade.

• As the solution matures, it will become increasingly applicable to greater portions of organizations and a greater breadth of industry verticals beyond the typical healthcare, finance, government, and education segments that dominate the market today.

• IDC believes desktop virtualization growth has strong legs. Favorable

Desktone’s platform• These type of activities do not happen without

a LOT of analysis

Super Favorable but I may be biased

Dell Acquistion of WyseSummary Bullets from IDC Acquisition Assessment 4/3/2012

• On, April 2, 2012, Dell announced its intent to acquire Wyse. • Dell has been working over the past two to three years

building out its client virtualization portfolio. • Dell can now match the spectrum of products offered by its

major competition. • IDC sees this as a positive acquisition that will help better

position Dell in the client virtualization marketplace. • IDC views the long-term play here is having the ability to

offer complete end-to-end solutions to customers,. The additional functionality added to Dell's overall offerings will ultimately make this acquisition successful.

Summary

• While a small and short example, one can see how pulling together a variety of data points, assessing and determining a consensus is helpful for evaluating any market for directional indicators.

• In this case, again IMO, the consensus is that VDI is experiencing increased adoption at an accelerated pace.
