Using Flash Fill in Excel 2013

• Flash fill is a new feature in Excel 2013• It is a versatile automatic filling tool• It allows you to specify any format for a text field such as a name

• It will apply the same format to the whole column

• For example, you may have three columns• Each column contains a first, second and last name• You can add another column to the right• Excel will extract the information from the first example• Flash Fill will format all the other records the same way

Using Flash Fill to format names

• All you have to do is enter the name in the first cell in the format that you want and press enter

• When you start typing the name in the second cell Excel should recognise the pattern and offer you suggestions for completing the remaining rows in the column

You can also manually implement Flash fill by using the flash fill button on the data tab or by pressing Ctrl + E when you're in the cell.

Enable Flash Fill from the Advanced Tab of the Options Dialog

• Excel will recognize the pattern and offer to fill the remaining entries in the series in the same way.

• If it doesn't do this automatically the first or second time you try it, check that the feature is enabled in Excel 2013 options under the Advanced tab.

• Go to File > Options > Advanced
