What is Proxy Logging?

• Analog (SD) or SDI (HD or SD)• Too much information to log digitally

– Analog - ~300 Mbps– HD-SDI – 1.5 Gbps– 10.8GBs per Mbps per day

– Solution: create and log proxy• Scale, then encode (H.264, VC-1)• SD - ~500kbps, HD – 1.5 Mbps

Proxy Logging

Benefits•Affordability and Density

• Manageable storage for 90+ days• Several channels per chassis

•Access to critical metadata• Extracted and embedded in proxy• CC, TT, AFD, …

•Remote Access to QoE – full frame rate A/V• Low enough BW to allow remote real time access

But it is still a proxy not the original

Page 9: Transport Stream And Next Generation Logging

Digital TV – Dist via Satellite or Over-The-Air

• MPEG-TS compressed content is the product• More channels, same analog BW• First with satellite in mid 1990s– • Then Over the air in 2000s – MPEG2 HD

– Why not log MPEG-TS in early 2000s?• Because it is harder to make the proxy – more $$• Not as much additional metadata –

– same product initially

– Now we can log the MPEG-TS affordably• SW & HW Codec Advances• Many programs on 1 interface + IP interfaces!

MPEG-TS Logging Features

• Access to Live or Log• Live for air check, Log for review

• Different logs for TS and Proxy• Short term storage of original (e.g. 19 Mbps)• Long term storage of proxy (e.g. 1.5 Mbps)

• Operate on LAN or WAN• Review of proxy, access to original• Export Proxy, TS of program or MPTS anywhere

• Extraction and storage of metadata with proxy• Measure on original, store results in proxy

• Log all or parts of the MPEG-TS MPTS• Only keep what you need, or keep it all

MPEG-TS Logging New Use Cases

• New use cases• Repurposing – original HQ MPEG content

– Navigation with proxy, access to original

• MPEG QoS Monitoring – real time or off line– Captures the complete MPEG TS, log eliminates chronics

• Monitoring Additional Metadata– DVB Subtitles, All audio tracks, Mobile-TV, …

• Enterprise Cable TV replacement – – access to original content, able to go back in time

• Future applications (Mobile, Interactive, …)– Automatically logged, enable troubleshooting
