Real-time coverage of live events
• 1. Live Blog (aka Mega-blog)• Purpose:
– Keeping the public continually informed about a major, breaking news event, unfolding over a relatively long period of time.
– Use sparingly but authoritatively; pick your opportunities well.– Especially critical where audience is dependent on mobile devices:
Feature it and keep featuring it — live blog as top destination– Best-executed from newsroom, taking updates from reporters in field
• Real-life examples:– Hurricane Sandy– Newtown shootings– Boston Marathon bombings
Real-time coverage of live events• 2. Live Televised Event• Purpose:
– Second-screen strategy, bringing staff expertise to bear on live events that users can watch elsewhere (TV) but that we cannot stream ourselves.
– Emphasis on engagement over informing: Users can see for themselves what's happening — our expert is adding value in terms of background, inside knowledge, wit, guidance of conversation, etc. Color commentary.
• Real-life examples:– RU football game– Televised press conferences– Real Housewives of NJ– American Idol finale
Real-time coverage of live events
• 3. Live Untelevised Event• Purpose:
– Play-by-play, essentially, of a live event that our users want to see but can't: We tell them what’s going on and add value through engaging with them.
– Similar to live blog but emphasis is on comments and embedded social media rather than body of post.
– Content comes directly from reporters on the scene rather than newsroom (see Live Blog).
• Real-life examples:– Gandolfini funeral– High-interest concert (Bruce!)– Courtroom drama
Real-time coverage of live events
• 4. Live Stream on Site• Purpose:– Allowing users to watch the action live on our site– Adding value to what users can see on site through staff
expertise/interaction in comments• Real-life example: Televised press conference• Tools/execution: – Embedded video player in a blog post on our site– Twitter widget underneath (if we can add on-scene color)– Staff in comments, engaging with users
